You misunderstood my meaning. I meant rather make your purchase three days before end of the month or sooner if that is what you require for reward level 5. That's taking a bit of a chance IMO.

I think you are going to have a huge uphill battle in getting a win now, but good luck!

edit: They are probably covered in their terms and conditions as the date on your statement for that purchase will reflect in the next calendar month (April). You might have initiated the payment in March but the payment only cleared in April according to FNB.

I doubt Takealot will send me a confirmation of receipt of payment on the 30th of March and make the product available for collection on the 30th of March if the payment didnt clear.

I want to share my experience with you guys this far.

In Dec 2014 I read through the majority of this thread bit by bit, after being on Lev1/2 for the duration of 2014 I was determined to reach Lev5.

Getting on Lev5:
At times I was left extremely frustrated by the lack of information availible online, and the lack of knowledge by FNB & Ebucks consultants. If it wasnt for this tread, there is no way in hell I would have been able to reach Lev5. Even with the info in this tread it took me long to plan my month effectively as to make sure I get the maximum amount of points allocated.

Friends/Family have asked me to help them get on Lev5, they pretty much just stare at me with a blank look in the face (dont understand jack s*&t) once I start explaining the criteria. From that point of view I rate the Ebucks loyalty system quite complicated for the average user. I am no stranger to loyalty programs, been on Vitality Gold status for the last 2 years. You have to be committed to understand the system to reach Lev5, and you have to strategically change some behavior.

Rewards:
Dec 2014: I received my Platinum CC & Cheque Card bundle.
Jan 2015: Jan was pretty much a write off, seeing that I was still doing research, confirming criteria, fighting with the call centre about points not being allocated etc. I managed to get to Lev3 and earn 1700 Ebucks.
Feb 2015: All the issues were ironed out: 1st month on Lev5, earned 6400 Ebucks
March 2015: Still on Lev5, earned 8080 Ebucks

Moving forward:
Ill keep a close eye on the rules, should they change, Ill try adapt my behavoir to stay on 5. Ive made a few calculations, and I should be able to consistently earn 5000 Ebucks a month. That covers my R200pm banking fees, plus some change to spare. I intend to buy vouchers @ 40% discount in the future, so that pushes up my earnings quite a bit.

Awesome story! You definitely make some valid points too.

Its easy peasy getting Vitality up to Platinum. Just for 3 years in a row do the boring stuff once a year, done. FNB is definitely a bit more work, but a lot of it you can also make passive behavioural changes, although it does take time and some work to change habits.

Maybe there really is a ebucks earning cult going on.

so give us an update of what you did.. step-by-step...

1. Do all your payments and transfers during the month via our electronic channels instead of an FNB Branch - 1500

2. Spend R2000 or more on your FNB Platinum Credit Card in a calendar month - 2000 (Its quite important to note that this works on a sliding scale, the more you spend, the more you will earn. I not using my Cheque card anymore, unless I draw money at a till)

3. Have monthly debit orders going off on your FNB Platinum Cheque account (Also a sliding scale, you have to have 6 or more to get the full 1000) - 1000

4. Have banked with FNB for 18 months or more - 1000

5. Have an Overdraft Facility of R5 000 or more and use between 10% and 100% of the facility ( I took out a relativly small limit of R5000. 2 days (just to be safe) before payday, I transfer all the money out of my Cheque into my CC, minus an additional R500. 2 days later the overdraft is paid off, and interest is minimized. Total cost is: R57 (overdraft cost) - R25 (rebate) + R1.07 (interest on overdraft) = R33.07) - 2000

6. Have an Auto Payment (debit order) set up on your FNB Platinum Credit Card. - 500

7. Choose to receive all your Account statements via email only - 500

8. Have a drafted and signed Will in custody with us (Costs a R100 a year. FNB sends a courier to fetch the will once completed) - 1000

9. Register for inContact , allow us to communicate with you and keep your contact information up to date - 500

10. Have a Temporary loan which you have settled in the month (within the specified period) (take out a R300 temp loan anytime during the month via internet banking. Cost is R39) - 2000

11. Use between 10% and 90% of your credit limit during the calendar month. (Make sure your credit limit is not too high, not too low) - 3000

12. Use your FNB Platinum Credit Card to pay for your online shopping. (I use my CC to pay my utility bills via Easypay) - 1500

13. Does the value of your FNB Platinum Card swipes and Cash@Till withdrawals exceed the value of your ATM and FNB Branch Withdrawals? (Only draw cash at tills)- 1500

Total points: 18 000

The total cost of my banking is thus: R199 (Platinum bundle) + R33.07 (Overdraft) + R39 (Temp Loan) + R8.33 (Will: R100/12months) = R279.40

Edit: In terms of the actual Ebucks earning, I only do grocery shopping at shop at Checkers, thats pretty much my cash cow, and petrol. Apart from that I didnt really make any other changes to my spending. Due to the reward level being so high on Lev5, it outweighs the cost of the additional fees.

That will custody one - do you also have to appoint them Executor for your estate (i.e. they get a % commission of your total estate for administrating this for you)?

I am on level 5 from March 2015 awell. I got to level 5, but didn't took any personal loans or temp loans out, nor do I have a will.

There was another thread on this site where some guys said, don't make debt to make a few a few extra rands. That is just stupid.

Even the R5000 overdraft loan ... why why why.

This is how I got to 18 000 points:

Do all your payments and transfers during the month via our electronic channels instead of an FNB Branch (1500)
Spend R2000 or more on your FNB Platinum Credit Card in a calendar month (1500)
Have monthly debit orders going off on your FNB Platinum Cheque account (1000)
Have banked with FNB for 18 months or more (1000)
Have an Auto Payment (debit order) set up on your FNB Platinum Credit Card. (500)
Choose to receive all your Account statements via email only (500)
Have an investment account which meets the average monthly balance of R10 000 or more (1500)
Register for inContact , allow us to communicate with you and keep your contact information up to date (500)
Use between 10% and 90% of your credit limit during the calendar month. (3000)
Have an active Home Loan with us that is in good standing and with a min outstanding balance of R250 000 (3000)
Does the value of your FNB Platinum Card swipes and Cash@Till withdrawals exceed the value of your ATM and FNB Branch Withdrawals? (1500)
Maintain a minimum monthly balance in your FNB Platinum Cheque Account or linked Savings Pocket of R15 000 or more (1000)
Have not exceeded your limit or gone into arrears on your Credit Card for six months and more (1500)

I wonder sometimes ... the more you spend, the more you earn ... now, how much did FNB make out of you to get to 36k ebucks in March. Must say, nice amount in one month

I think the most fair comparison would be: If I had banked with another bank would it have worked out better for me?

The answer is no. Any interest saving, lower fees, higher return on investments and including (ucount/greenbacks/absa/air miles) rewards from any of the other banks would not come close to matching what I get from FNB.

Estimate: 50% earned from 15% category (R12k spend); 50% from 3% category (R60k); ~total spend = R72k

Its absolutely worth it to "make debt", if you consider the opportunity cost...

The R300 Temp loan & R500 overdraft effectively costs me R72 a month. For this R72 I jump from Level 4 to 5, and that means I earn DOUBLE the amount (from 7.5% to 15%) on my Petrol & Checkers spend.

Because petrol & Checkers spend makes up the bulk of my earnings I would have earned almost half of the 8080 Ebucks in March.

That means Im paying R72 for a extra 4000 Ebucks in a month. That sounds like a no brainer to me?

It is drafted like that in the will but nothing stops you from changing it. The courier doesn't check it and I don't know if FNB checks it.

I don't think I can call this a no brainer, think FNB make money out of you. That's my point.

Mmm, I still differ regarding the loans, lol. I bank with FNB for one main reason ... I never paid any banking fees for 15 years (and before you guys ask if I am an FNB employee, no I am not.) I have a platinum package.

I am not with FNB for the rewards. The rewards is a bonus. I got to level 5 without making the bank richer. Its a lifestyle as I said before.

But what the previous guy said, FNB has a great rewards program, that is true ! I wont differ there at all.

Well, the trick is not to be suckered into spending more than you would ordinarily. If you need to spend on something then buy it in a way that you can benefit from over and above Joe Bloggs.
