I agree that software is a major component - yes. I believe that it is (at most) 70% of the device (depending on user requirements).
However, regarding the comparisons..
It is a fair comparison. The stock OS with the Hero vs. the stock OS with the N8 - fair.
I'm comparing the OS that was released with the phone. Why would a manufacturer release an OS that doesn't make the phone work at it's best? Sure you release updates - that's expected.
To compare the N8 with any device released after it was is also unfair then, isn't it?
Then comparing the N8 to a phone in a price bracket higher than it is also unfair (i.e. > R4999), right?
the whole reason why it isnt fair in this case is because in 2.2 they implemented JIT compilation for thier apps and games, which speeds up things significantly. Android updates were very iterative and each update opened the doors to more features and improvements. 1.5 is a seriously bad OS for our time right now, hardly anything from the android market can work on 1.5. you seriously telling me that its a fair game? a more fair comparison would be the N97 vs the Hero
point 1. yes its unfair, you never see any reputable site compare new vs old unless 1 phone is a predecessor of the other (something like comparing iPhone 4 to the 3GS to see if the iPhone 4 is worth its weight in gold etc)
and your second point is true, even in Engadgets review they state the phone is in its own price margin, which makes it hard to compare to anything
