Also do not forget that some of the South African educated and trained doctors bugger off to Canada, Australia, UK, USA, New Zealand as soon as they can. I don't know the exact statistics but I would not be surprised if the majority of those were white.

Maybe that's the governments plan...
I think they do this during their final year of studies.Do docs have to do their community service before or after they graduate?
Cos working for a pittance while the interest on the student loans compounds cannot be a great motivator to stick around

Not that i'm going to defend the quota's BUT its not like that at all.
They just try and get their quota's of AA candidates before they fill up the posts with white doctors, so there are not any less doctors. Also they have a quota for woman doctors, unfortunately white males qualify and leave the country, its a statistical fact. It costs the government a million rand to make a doctor, so when they leave the country its a problem.
Personally I would focus on looking after them and retaining them... but that is a hard one.
Unfortunately this article is sensationalist, the reality is that this person misrepresented them self as something they were not. Other candidates who were better qualified missed out on the position because she lied.
The other thing is that if you look at the doctors that do qualify, most of them are from privileged backgrounds. The reason being is that to get through the 6 years of study, 200k in costs and still be able to survive you need a tremendous amount of support. Most people just don't have it, even middle class whites will struggle to put a kid through medical school. Hence the majority of people who do get through do so because they have the means.

No, community service is after graduation. The final year internship is a requirement for graduation.

You might call me racist, but I never go to a black doctor for this exact reason. I believe they set lower pass marks for them just so the anc can have their racist 80/20 ratio. **** that, I value life too much to take that chance. I bet I'm not the only one that feels this way about the situation.

So the medical degree course work is now 6 years and the 7th year is community service? Either way they can leave for overseas as soon as they graduate (after they've done community service). I think the community service should be extended to at least 3 years post graduation.

Doctors study for 6 years (at most universities), in their final year they do a little bit of work in the hospital (mostly learning) and don't get paid
Then they do 2 years of internship (worldwide standard) they get paid for this, was not much but now its about R20k PM
Then they do the "Zuma year" of community service and they get closer to R30k PM
After that they can work where they want but will more than likely have to specialise before they can work in private

Anyhoo, the ANCYL have started being more involved on university campuses. The latest big thing was in Free State.
It's a good idea and it could work, but the ANCYL aren't big on things that work.

Actually, they go through the same curriculum, same exams and have the same requirements for a pass at Med school. As far as I understand this discrimination happens only during admission.

No its not a requirement for graduation, you graduate but can only work as a doctor if you do this time. Some doctors go overseas, do an exam and then do their internship in that country. If they do this then they mist still do the "Zuma year" of community service.

I know what you mean about UFS. My cousin who studies there told me the same thing about local people that are not even enrolled at the university organising protests and marches.

My wife's white friend got 4 distinctions and got in to medical school. They look at a lot more then your marks, she helped out at clinics and did other social work. Today she is a dedicated doctor and you would be lucky to be seen by her.
You can't just rock up with 10 A's and expect them to just let you in. There is a lot more to it.
Schools do need to be sorted out as well.
