Top cop becomes bad guy's nightmare

By Kanina Foss

Soweto wasn't big enough for both of them. It was only a matter of time before the ace detective would get his man.

The suspect knew this. He didn't need any introduction to Soweto's top cop. He knew this detective wouldn't rest until he had him behind bars.

The drunken bar brawl which had ended a man's life and left another seriously injured on May 31 had been seen by many witnesses.

Even his mother knew her son had become a murderer.

But that wasn't the worst of it. The worst part, the thing that drove him to flee the area, was that the incident would fall under the jurisdiction of the most feared cop in Soweto - Inspector Amos Maneta.

At night, in hiding, Maneta tormented him. He couldn't sleep. He kept seeing Maneta coming to arrest him.

Some of his friends had been taken down by Maneta, and he himself had been arrested by Maneta six years before for hijacking.

He knew the way the detective would use his informers in the community to root out a criminal; the way he'd work day and night to pin a man down; and the look he'd have in his eyes when he swooped.

Finally, he couldn't take it anymore. He boarded a train.

Early last Saturday, Maneta's phone rang. It was a police officer from Kliprivier who said there was someone who wanted to talk to him. The person wanted to hand himself in.

It's not the first time a suspect has chosen to hand himself in rather than wait for Maneta to find him.

Last year, a man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death in Soweto presented himself at the Naledi police station, where Maneta is stationed.

He said he knew Maneta would catch him anyway, even if he ran away.

A taxi boss who kidnapped and killed one of his own drivers also cracked under the pressure of having Maneta on his case.

Police sources said the latest suspect to hand himself in had been charged with murder and attempted murder, and appeared in the Soweto regional Court on Tuesday.

When reading this, I get a vivid picture of a "Shaft" like character. This guy must be hectic!!!!

Good to see people like him and Piet byleveld are still willing to try and make SA a better place instead of going somewhere where the pay is better :)

I have a mental image of Amos Maneta looking just like Hightower. :p

Respect to him! So good to hear something postive about the SAPS! Boo-yah!
