Torrents and me

Speed restrictions are all set to 0(no restriction).
Not a good idea to max your torrent speeds, on a 4MB line I reckon start with global settings of 200kB/s down and 35kB/s up, if your download is stable for an hour or so adjust up bit by bit.

TI's torrent shaping is haphazard at present so I'd recommend getting a capped account with another ISP for a month to fine tune your limits.

I downloaded torrents using Vuze last night. 235mb movie came down in under 5 mins on my 10mb line. Capped. This was around 18:30. Saw download speeds > 930kb/s at times.

Yeah I tried Vuze also last night again, that's hardly connecting at all!!!

I doubt it's Telkom as ISP though, usenet's working perfectly. Downloaded up to 700+kb/s last night.

Usenet and Torrents are very different though.
I always found newsgroups to fly but torrents to creep with TI

I use and have been using BitTorrent for years and never had issues, however letting torrents run in the day is sure way to get throttled - but they usually still throttle me at around 20kb/s which is bearable. At night it flies right up to 150-200kb/s (I have a 2mb Uncapped Mweb account)

Firstly - I agree with Thor187 - AH is great for torrents.
Secondly, with Vuze, go into settings and change your port numbers and retry.
Often, my torrents will slow up, I will change TCP and UDP port number and I am off again.

Also, set your download to around 350kbps and upload to 30kbps (assuming a 4meg line)

Try that out.

P2P traffic throttled ? Perhaps....

Grab a free 1GB account fron AF and test again.

I think this, he is on a telkom uncapped account, try out a free VPN or a free capped gig from webafrica/Afrihost. If you still have the problem it's your configurations, if it isn't, then it's the uncapped account.

You know what I've recenly done with my Torrents?
I started using free download manager as my torrent downloader as well.
Compared to Utorrent, like night and day.

I can get full line speed on a 20Mb VDSL with FDM but Utorrent hobbles along.

Nope, that's the beauty.
You just install it and load your torrent or magnet link into it.

Interesting... thanks!

Ask telkom to recreate your port and revert your router to factory default and set it up from the ground up.

It works wonders.

That's a spam adware magnet.

Not much wrong with uTorrent. You get used to the bugs, but speed is as good as it gets.

I must admit, i really don't mind if they block me during the day from downloading torrents.

I can then set up usenet during the day and torrents for the evenings...but sadly, torrents doesn't download at all...

When I phone telkom and ask them to reset my line port, you can seriously here the cockroach falling off the log... They don't understand at all what i'm talking about... Yo line is weking sa!!

I'll try a few of these steps tonight quick. Thank you everyone for your help so far!!!!!

P.S Are there any specific ports to try out in these torrent apps? I've tried a few specific ones at home, but to no avail...
