I'm thinking of going the nzb route. I'm on uncapped.

I currently use downstorm which is a paid torrent download service (R50 - 6GB). So I get torrents at full line speed. Old stuff is also available - like some b&w movie from the 50's.

With NZB the way I understand it, only the latest stuff is available. You still have to pay if you want a reliable service (international news servers). You also have to pay to get access to a good nzb indexing site.

So what's the advantage in SA considering uncapped and the costs vs. benefits for both. You pay for both (for a premium experience). But torrents have the advantage of (theoretically) unlimited retention.

Just found this post by killadoob

The difference:

Torrents often have passworded files and you cannot always trust them.
Nzb's can be 1000 days old and you can download full speed
Just about anything you can imagine is on nzb.
You don't have to worry about uploading nor do you have to worry that you won't get full speed.
It costs about 70-100 bucks more to use nzb's if you use international servers but it worth the extra cost.
Nzbs are far far superior to torrents in every way except financially but you get free news servers as well but it is so cheap i doubt many people will struggle to find 100 bucks extra a month.

I don't even touch torrents anymore. nzbmatrix.com is all a person needs .

I guess that summarizes it. I'll stick with torrents. :)

Why when the post you quoted suggests that the main advantage of torrents is cost? Even then you pay R50 for 6 GB when 10-15 US dollars can get you unlimited news server downloads at close to full line speed on a 4Mb line.

I'm not trying to get you to switch to nzb, I'm just curious as to why you chose torrents given the evidence you quoted.

I tried news servers once.... it failed because nothing ever came down. They are always too busy.

torrents I click... then they work. Only other thing I have had to do its get a peer blocker.

Was this a paid news server or one of the dodgy local ISP ones? I agree that torrents are easier to use than nzb, but most times when I use torrents I'm stuck with only a handful of seeds and downloads crawl. At least with nzb, if what I want is available, I'm almost always guaranteed fast downloads.

I have used news servers for about 5 years now. Mostly I download new stuff, so I just use the free news servers. speed wise, I haven't had an issue at all. Got to say SabNZBd+ sickbeard is awesome.

NZB... torrents are a waste just about everything I do at home is automated now. If I want something, type it in on my phone, and it starts downloading at home.

Sickbeard
SABNZB
CouchPotato
NZBAir
XBMC
MySQL

Entire media collection automated.

And I pay R70 not R100.

Never have this problem. Just read the comments, note the seeds.

Same with downstorm. And I get things more than a 1000 days old.

Just about anything you can imagine is on nzb.
My imagination might be limited, but I've never had a problem finding anything - unless its really really old. Like before the internet was invented. But even then.

More nice for less price.

So I pay R50 vs. R100. Get everything I need, with any disadvantages taken care by downstorm.

I'll stick with torrents coz it works for me. And nzb's don't provide any distinct advantage for me. That's just me.

That's why I started this thread. Just got me my microserver + xbmc, and looking to do this. Hence the interest in nzb

The age of the nzb is not the age if the episode or movie or whatever, simply when it was upped, there is tons of old stuff, even on the free servers. Stuff gets re upped constantly

I have 3 microservers :p The one being the actual server, and the other being media players.

As soon as harddrives come down - I want to get a decent case that can take 10 drives, and make that the server.

Calm down guys. I'll give it a go.

Any advice on the variables. News server, nzb site. Premium is cool. I want a fair indication of what the capabilities are.

Wouldn't be able to use torrents anymore - basically impossible for me to find 720p WEB-DL or Bluray rips on torrent sites. Now that 99% of my stuff is in HD, torrents would be really bothersome.

I use NZB AND torrents...!
NZB using mweb server and a free index site (i forgot the name) for the latest tv shows (using sickbeard) and movies ,and torrents for the rest of my stuff.

Edit:i use mostly NZB

Isn't it better to get a 720p HD for less than 700mb via a torrent than a 15gig 1080p via a news server?
There really isn't that much difference, and you'll have a much more compact library.

Huh? 720p for 700MB... and compare it to a 15GB 1080p?

ok i was considering this 2 weeks ago, so just to give you some feedback on my personal experience between the 2,

downloaded sabnzbd, got a free account at xsusenet, and signed up at nzbmatrix on a free account.

with all of this free i could download files that are up to 20 days old (for free), Using just the xsusenet server i managed to download at roughly 50-70kb/s on all nzb files, was a little dissapointed but then started reading a bit. I added news.saix.net (im using telkom uncapped 3 month promo so therefore used the saix server) onto my servers as a second server and all of a sudden my download speeds were up to 100-110kb/s (which is full line speed on my 1mb line). Was getting irritated that i could only download up to 20 days old so paid R87 for an nzbmatrix account and so far have downloaded about 30-40gb in the last 2 weeks. im not a heavy downloader but files i couldnt find on torrent were here, so much better than torrents so far and doubt ill go back.

Theres a few files i cant find on nzb that i have with torrent but im sure using another nzb search site will get me those files.
