Traffic cops hunt CA 488281
08/04/2008 21:09 - (SA)

Cape Town - The city of Cape Town has called on members of the public to help in the hunt for its top 10 traffic offenders. The worst offender has 86 arrest warrants against him.

It said in a media statement on Tuesday that more than 717 warrants for the arrests of the offenders had been issued.

"These vehicles are all registered as Toyota minibuses, but the addresses are incorrect," said Ian Iversen, chairperson of the city's finance portfolio.

Because the addresses were incorrect the culprits could not be traced, said Iversen.

Iversen said: "Traffic Services are ready to pounce on them, but need more information.

"We call on residents to provide any information which could assist traffic services in rounding up these offenders to the metro police control centre on 0860 765 423.

"These culprits may think they are getting away with their transgressions for now, but the city will not relent in its endeavours to catch them."

"The top culprit, CA 488281, has 86 warrants followed by CA&nbsop;361 318 with 83 warrants," the statement said.

Minibus taxis....who woulda thought it huh?

Its about time that these taxis were seized and impounded for any traffic violation they are stopped for. Writing a ticket, sending them on their wat and expecting them to go pay it obviously doesnt work.

These may be violations that were caught on camera though.

This is one way, I guess, for the Powers That Be, to soften up the public and get them used to the idea of official public announcements of alleged criminals details, as well as spreading the idea that citizens should turn into proxy policemen on the authorities behalf.

I could understand it if it was a rapist serial killer with a chainsaw and several unreturned dvd's.. but 'traffic offenses'?

Naturally its just traffic offenses, so no one could reasonably argue against this..

watch for the mission creep to unfold, as Big Brother flexes its muscles..

Surely they know the time and place of most of these offences ? Why can't they deduce the routes used by the offenders and work out the taxi ranks that are used ?

What is the issue now? Traffic offenses kill people - did you not see the death toll figures for Easter?
Not everything is some conspiracy to wrestle your freedoms from you. Criminals (yes - these people are criminals) should be hunted down using all available resources.

Agreed with Moederloos. Nothing different from this than sending an sms to the crime stop number to report a crime.

Note they don't want the public to apprehend the offender, merely report where he is seen. Safer roads for the rest of us

You're right, it could be a mom in Plattekloof who gives her kids a lift to ballet.

Well, where we are, the is a Maid Service that uses these vehicles - and the damn thing drives worse than a taxi driver. Also, those "kiddie shuttles" that drop kids at school - I would rather my kid walked than used the one I see breaking as many laws as possible.

And the good news is that there will always be a top 10 offender list.

So true... get these 'current' top 10 and you replace them with 10 new wannabes.

However, prison sentences and such (harder punishments) could sort this out.

Emphasis on the word 'could' :D

The cops should goto ranks, close them down when it's at its busiest and check each vehicle, one at a time :D

They CA vehicles, they can only be in so many places, ranks etc ;)

All the culprits are taxis

Officials are enlisting the public's help in tracking down the Mother City's worst traffic offenders.

The city of Cape Town has listed 10 vehicle registration numbers, all belonging to minibus taxis.

The drivers of the taxis share more than 700 arrest warrants between them.

That makes an average of 70 offenses per vehicle. One would think that after 10 or 20 there should be some alarm bells ringing.

Now that's a bit unreasonable. They often stand around during the quieter times of day doing very little. Rather send some plainclothes guys through to spot some licenses, and then let them call in the uniforms if they spot any wanted taxis. That at least won't disrupt the transport for all the people that depend on these taxis. Smashing a fly with a hammer is not practical.

And CA plates mean they can still be anywhere in SA.

What I would also rather do is put up a post with 50 wanted plates. Anyone that can supply enough information to lead to an arrest gets 20% of the paid fine. There are a lot of people that use taxis that can use that money. Standing around waiting for a taxi gives you a lot of time.
