Can you not use a Visa embossed debit card (with Chip)?

I can't see why not. I use my Nedbank debit card (Mastercard) with no issues overseas. (However I mostly use my Virgin credit card for my transactions)

Sure. I try to stick to credit cards (ideally amex) though since they generally have better fraud protection. Friends card got cloned on a euro trip like 2 days ago...

You're not going to get shot in Europe but the scammers are alive and well there too.

Best to use a visa card.
Inform your bank of travel.
Take a spare card (mastercard) and store it separately.
Take out 100-200 euro cash for spending. ..buy rest on cc

Surprised how many places accept amex cards though.

Unless you expect the ZAR to tank I don't see the benefit over just using your existing card.

It helps you, if you're bad at maths to understand what your budget is over there, without having to convert to ZAR in your mind on every swipe. And take some cash.
