Trouble with disassembly hpdv6000

i read about that. where can i get a little of it instead of buying a whole bottle for a few drops. if its like R20 ill buy it.

Maybe try a hardware store or a place that sells sewing machines etc.

what do i use to clean the old thermal paste off and where can i find thermal paste. inc connection?

Isopropyl alcohol from a chemist/pharmacy will do fine and it's cheap. Can use a toothpick to pick out lumps followed by a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

so i gt the alcohol and thermal paste. paste was R19 from matrix. 50ml alcohol was R2. petrol was about R2000 fuuuuuuuuu!

now to find the machine oil...

if the fan is still faulty after this i will just replace it with a desktop :)

Got this from builders warehouse for R50 this afternoon

ok so i managed to take the whole fan apart. cleaned it all up. even the radiator fins-went to a garage and used the tyre pressure hose LOL! Looks like new :)

watched a few more clips but I'm not certain where to put the thermal paste as the vids differ and the service manual just says replace. now theres an nvidia chip, GPU and processor chip. theres a pad in the middle of the which goes over the GPU and the ends have plates. should i remove the pad and just add thermal paste to all plates? Or just the processor?

I'm wondering if the thermal pad over the GPU should remain because it is quite thick and maybe the thermal paste wont make contact between the cooling plate and the GPU.

Post some clear pics please. If there are thermal pads then don't remove them unless you have replacements available.

Leave the pads unless you can get some replacements.

OK. Should I put paste on the nvidia chip on the lhs of the board? There wasn't any on there. I can see some behind the silver plate which goes onto the chip. But there was nothing directly on the chip.

If there was some on the plate then you might as well put some on the chip, should spread onto plate once you tighten things down.

there was some on the plate but behind the plate, and not between the plate and chip. hence my confusion.

also i cleaned the thermal pad of the GPU with alcohol. not sure if that was a bad idea. i guess i could just replace the pad but i just want to put things together tonight.

Is there anything between the top of the plate and the case it makes contact with? Something else that is metal that could possibly further conduct heat? Is not I don;t see the point of paste on top of the plate.

I would also be confused ;)

if you look at uploadfromtaptalk1364832603717.jpg above, you will notice the silver metal piece on the top of the pic. theres a black square piece like a border around the silver square piece.

i guess thermal paste would not hurt the chip right? or maybe the nvidia chip doesnt really get as hot as the GPU and CPU.

Are you saying there was paste between the black piece and the plate? Did you remove the black piece?
