I phoned Telkom in Nov 2013 to confirm if the property I am interested in, in Brackendowns supports 10Mbps, because I am working from home and require atleast 10Mbps. I was running fine on 10Mbps until Dec 2015 when my line started dropping none stop. After a long struggle with Telkom they eventually came back and said I cannot get more than 8Mpbs. I had no choice but to accept the 8Mbps line speed.
Now on 28-Dec-2016 they line started dropping again. I had to struggle with Telkom until 17-February-2017 to get the line stable. They dropped the line to speed to 5Mpbs with 720Kbps upload speed. I refused to accept that speed because UK customers could not hear me on VOIP because I was breaking up extremely badly. Eventually they got the speed to:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6398 kbps 1021 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.5 db 28.5 db
Noise Margin 6.6 db 5.9 db
The SNR and Attenuation is very bad, but atleast it is working. But I know I am going to have trouble with this connection again in a couple of months.
The Telkom specialist and Telkom technician told me there is so many connections and demand increased so the congestion is causing the line speeds to drop. He told me there needs to be and upgrade done (additional underground cable) but there is no plans in the pipe line to do this.
Unfortunately there is no other options available. VDSL sync is worse and ADSL, Telkom LTE uncapped does not cover this area, Fiber is not planned for this area. Vodacom LTE is R999 for 20GB and I need about 250 to 300GB a month to be safe.
