Tshwane plans broadband network

Wonder how long this will take to go live and what it will cost, roughly. Can't help but see a GTS sign fading into the distance and wonder whether bribery would've helped?

I wouldn't trust the municipality to offer a good broadband service. How do they think they can "do it cheaper" than everyone else?

I have high speed (free) broadband in Tswane.. just look at my sig ;)

I was under the impression PTAWUG do not provide any internet access , how do you get broadband access on it ?

that depends on your definition of broadband....broadband does not necesarily implies internet connectivity could also refer to the "bandwith on a network.

Is it illegal to call it Pretoria anymore? But don't mind me; carry on licking the ANC's ass :rolleyes:

This sounds like some brain fart "concept statement"...
The aim of the project is:
- To provide affordable, true broadband connectivity to the City of Tshwane residents;
- To ensure that the network stimulates the creation of high speed and uptake of high bandwidth services to the residents of Tshwane;
- To promote educational, social and cultural development of the City of Tshwane residents and visitors.
True broadband imply no limitations, no limitations means abuse from few irresponsible individuals (power users that brake AUP), this leads to exlusion by cost or capping with brings us to where we are .....

am i missing something here.....

Wait they must be talking about creating a Pretoria library intranet network...

Pretoria is the city, Tswane is the wider district. And they can try and force us to call it Tswane but we know who built and found this city,Andries Pretorius. And sure, the native tribes might have stayed here prior to the afrikaaner people, but we conquered it fair and square.

While I welcome further networks and competition, I think that the local government should rather focus about providing their primary responsiblitiy i.e. water, electricity, sanitation and other services. I don't see our roads being maintained or sidewalks and parks being maintained.

Why should they be allowed to invest my rates and taxes in a venture that competes with the private sector which will be run by people who do not have the expertise or accountability to run it effeciently?

Tshwane cannot organize a piss-up in a brewery let alone pull this off.:mad:

Damn, they cannot pick up refuse and bill you when for 4 weeks they delivered nothing. They will end up billing residents for imaginary services.

It is time that local government do what they are supposed to do and stop their bribery and full scale corruption.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

The real joke here is that the local government dont want to pay anything for the infrastructure and want to be able to use it for free for camera monitoring, etc, so there is no advantage to the supplier.

They will have to recoup their investment by selling broadband services over the network so there is no chance it will be "affordable"

Why is anybody still taking these bungling fools seriously?

Here are only two examples of such wonderful projects they announced before, which they promptly messed up:

Further digging revealed that they actually tried wireless before and canned it:

O yes, and then there is of course this fabrication of 30Mbps access speeds for residents:

They should rather follow the "Baby-steps" method and start off with fixing their accounts system that has been broken for many, many years. After that, they can move on to the next level which will be to take one small tender like the one for the cutting of the grass in the Metro area, and see if they can make that work.

After that they should be ready for the big leagues.
