Tutu withdraws from leadership summit

No. Zero respect.
He gave final approval to his speaking engagement a long time ago, and when he gave that approval he knew who else was being billed to speak. He made a commitment and he is now reneging on that commitment. Hardly the traits of a so-called leader or religious man.

Discovery has spent a lot of money on the conference through marketing and advertising specifically billing Tutu as a speaker. If there is any financial repercussion as a result of his actions, I hope they sue him.

He has a constitutional right you not attend. A true leader is wise enough to make the best statement honour his morals and choose not to associate a platform with lousy scum.
I hate Discovery as well, constantly declining medical payments with teeny weeny clauses, rather fitting that they support a war criminal.
Tutu just said F U to Bliar and discovery by consistently exercising his rights, and I'm glad he has done so.

*Tony not such a bad guy, he messed up by following the US, the US had the wool over most of the worlds eyes. All great leaders make mistakes, I'll name them but will probably derail this thread.

I respect him for his decision, I'm entitled to. You're not entitled to tell me No, I'm not allowed to respect him.
I'll probably be cancelling my discovery accounts too, in protest of their promotion of warmonger Tony Blair.

Yes he has a constitutional right, no one is arguing with that. He however undertook a contractual obligation to attend and speak - one that would have been done a long time ago with full knowledge of the list of attendees. So why NOW specifically does he withdraw? He let them down by declining at the last minute. That's just not on.

Also you mention Tutu "just said F U to Bliar and discovery consistently exercising his rights" but this is his first instance of doing anything to Blair/Discovery?

In any event we need to differentiate between the substance as to why he pulled out, and the manner.

I take gripe with the manner he withdrew - but it seems everyone is only focussed on the substance.

Do you work for discovery? Actively involved in this seminar?

He could have accepted with a good heart as a true leader would, it's honourable to be revered still as a leader at his ripe age.
Perhaps his conscience got the better of him, maybe he sent a pigeon to the Vatican for advice, maybe the decision was a hard one to make? We can only speculate. It's not the first time he's done something like this as a caller on the radio this afternoon said.

I'm not sure if it is his first statement or standing against Bliar, if it is, it's a very strong one, of it's not, Discovery should have been aware of it earlier.
 
Tutu stands next to Mandela as one of South Africa's great leaders. He has never endorsed terrorism but has made many sacrifices and risked his own life to save the lives of others. His uncompromising message of peace and forgiveness helped to transform South Africa into a wonderful country.

We can all be greatful for such lives and leadership which have paved the way for the prosperity we enjoy. Some of us are humbled by these examples.

Blair started his political career with the right ideals but was totally corrupted until he was lying and defying his own people until they had had enough and ousted him. Unfortunately the war he started still lingers on and has helped destabilise a whole region. This will yet come back to bite all of us. Meanwhile he openly showed who his allies were - tyrants in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere.

That is not my definition of a leader and I cannot for a second fathom why Discovery would want to associate with such non-greatness.

Yup. He fingers issues which some people find uncomfortable. If you've paid R7000 for a ticket, you sure as heck didn't come for too much introspection - rather a bit of slick entertainment :whistle:
