TV

... But that IS your answer :

Why did I buy an LCD?

The salesman pushed you!
The manufacturer pushed you!
The set the plasma levels down!
The set the LCD levels up!
He gets more commission!
That have too much stock!
Etc etc etc

Try get a real reason

It is generally because salesmen push the 1080p LCD's because they have a higher markup and consequently higher commission.

...Of course.

So people are droids and ignore what they see - and go simply on what the salesman says?

Seems you may be caught in the same world where humans are simple droids.

Not droids, just mot as technically savvy as you or I so most people take the advice of so-called "expert" salesmen.

Went to the samsung store in Gateway earlier and all the guy could really tell me about the 50" plasma was that it uses WAY MORE electricity than a LCD. lol :p

This is getting ridiculous now. What salesmen say can not negate the fact that entry plasmas beat mid range LCD, and even high end LCDs when it comes to TV/sport. Anyone who goes to a shop and watches TV/sport and thinks mid LCD is better is on something (or the sources are different). The difference is night and day.

And for the record, not understanding how salesmen work makes you sound like an ignorant droid. ;)

Even if they can see which is better for themselves - and have the capability to think?

Perhaps it's just me and the people I know, but if I do an A/B comparison of a terrible product and a excellent product, there's no way ever a salesperson is going to convince me. You don't need to be technically savvy to think 'oh - that looks better than that ...

It makes no sense. In that case, he may as well stick to his 2005 thinking of gray blacks and dull colours. At leasts it sounds better than 'the salesman made me choose an LCD!'. Yes, all 50 million of us ...

And for the record, not understanding how salesmen work makes you sound like an ignorant droid. ;)

I've sold items - retail and corporate - face-to-face, telephonic, internal/external sales from R4.00 globes, to banking products to R1m WAN optimization products for the past 12 years. I do have a vague understanding ....

you two at it again!! :D

just to add my two cents here. Im in a pretty good spot to be comparing LCD vs Plasma as you all know I got the Samsung 42" Plasma for myself, and at about the same time my girlfriends father bought the Sony 32" LCD (which I WAS going to buy). The more and more I experience these two TV's the more pleased I am with my purchase. Im not just saying that for the sake of it, or for being right.... I just want people here to spend their hard earned money correctly.

So last night I watched The Book of Eli and I was NOT impressed with the colour and more specifically the darkness levels. Eventually I asked ppl if they wouldnt mind if I paused it and fiddled with the picture settings a bit... Eventually landed up watching on Sony's "vivid" setting which kept me quiet.... I mean obviously some TV's you need to tweak a bit, but this was a bit over the top :erm:

Just some more food for thought, in terms of LCD vs Plasma in the SAME price range +-

...much of the entertainment this here thread has.

Anyway, I read on this forum last week about a guy having to really tweak settings to get images to look 'right' on his plasma. Is this normal?
I've got the LA40C530 and haven't messed around with any settings. Picture is on 'Natural', sound is on 'Clear Voice' and everything looks and sounds 'right'. Sound is not really an issue as I use my HT for sound most of the time anyway.
SD tv on my LCD is actually ok. Yeah I'm sure soccer would look better on a plasma but I'm happy with my LCD and Dstv. The only issue I have is the wide-screen effect on channels (which is all besides the movie channels) that leaves everything looking stretched. I can 'fix' it but then there's those black bars on either side of the screen to deal with.

Just my 2c.

I would say no, as quite a few other forumites have the same model and I've not read anything about them needing to tweak much. My 42C450 certainly didn't need much tweaking and picture is better than anything I've seen before, even high end LCDs. ;)

I have quite a bit of experience with your 40C530 and SD TV is just about acceptable IMO, however nothing like a plasma. For SD sources/sport, plasma makes the most sense. For PC usage, get LCD.

:D

I need a strong drink

LOL.

Yeah ok, but I'm gonna search for that thread. IIRC, there was a few of folks asking about this one dude about the tweaking he did.
I agree though, SD tv is 'acceptable' but as I've said before my tv perfectly suits my requirements and I'm happy with it so far. The more than capable built-in media player is an added bonus imo. Just plug 'n play.

Yeah well, that's TV calibration & wanting the best I'd say. I also Googled best tweaks for my TV because I wanted the best. Anyway, I don't have experience with the model you are talking about yet, only the 42"ers, so can't really comment on that TV. What I know though, is that having to calibrate has little bearing on the LCD vs. plasma argument.

Yeah I know the two aren't related at all. I was just wondering if having to sit and play with settings was the norm when getting a plasma. But you said it isn't so that's kinda the end of it for me. I'm might also Google 'the best tweaks' for my tv at some point (not sure if there is actually anything to tweak though) but for now the picture looks right so I'm happy.

p.s. I can't seem to find that thread btw. Found it: Samsung PS-50C550 50" FHD Plasma TV

Yeah you should Google for a user's thread, it's in your best interests. You might be able to get SD TV even acceptabler. :D Have a nice day.

Morning pitstop for a drink?

That explains a ton of things ;)
