Biggest problem with Complexes in my opinion is that stupid rule most come up with that every house must be an exact duplicate of the one next to it.
Standard practice all over the country.
Crowbars sort out any number of security gates and such...
Neighbours a few houses down from us got robbed a few years back. Security gate was popped open using a car jack (also the diamond-shape type). Robbers sommer dumped the jack in their garage.
A few weeks later the house across from us had a fire early in the morning. The inhabitants were trapped in the house and couldn't get out. Neighbour took one look at their kitchen door's security gate (which was locked), ran back to her house and grabbed the jack that was still lying in the garage.
They popped open the bars quickly, bent them away by hand without much effort and the people could crawl out through the hole.
If it wasn't for the break-in with the discarded jack, we wouldn't have known you could do that and the guys might not have gotten out of the burning house.
Still, burglaries SUCK. Got robbed about 3 times as a kid. The financial implications can be really bad, and more than that.. I cannot fathom why you would want to take something that doesn't belong to you.

In our area the complexes are now the main targets. They have given up breaking in during the night because we catch them (Radio Buddies), so they try when we are at work now. The complexes are now being hit because we unfortunately do not have "Buddies" in complexes due to the difficulties in responding to mayday calls.
Whilst meeting with SAPS they are certain it's residents. They move in with a Nissan 1400 and move out a month or 2 later with a truck with all the goodies they steal.
Also in complexes there is a false sense of security and hence few alarms and "neighborhood" watches.
Hope they catch them.
