Ubuntu 11.10

I think Windows 7 was the death of Ubuntu.
Does 11.10 support native gaming out of the box ?

Windows is over priced.............a virus haven.

Think outside the box man......there is a brighter bigger world out there.;)
 
Ok, I've downloaded the 32-bit & 64-bit versions (thanks 8ta for the 10GB promo!) and gonna install it now on my Dell laptop.

Feeling very excited! :)

Indeed.

Windows 7 is fun, but Ubuntu is awesome. It's like going on an adventure and you're bound to end up getting dirty and enjoying every moment of it.
 
Apart from a lack of sound and this coming up repeatedly as if it cannot see the CD in the drive:
Media change: please insert the disc labeled

in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press enter

I am quite happy with 11.10 :).
 
Upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 - man this Unity Interface is really crap
Is it my inability to change or what - I guess so, will take some time

Upgrade was flawless and working well

Fresh installed 11.10(64bit) - past experience suggested updating from 11.04 may be problematic - all well but had some initial issues with ATI/AMD drivers. The drivers from AMD website do not work but using Ubuntu's proprietary driver installation tool worked fine. Also installed ccsm(Compiz Config Settings Manager) to reduce size of dock icons, etc. Working well so far...
 
Did the upgrade overnight and using it for the first time now... loving what I'm seeing. Unity is finally polished, the login screen finally makes it look like a 21st century OS, no more confusing menu bar positions.. very very impressed!

I agree with this. However, am putting together a new rig, was wondering if I should put
Win 7 on it too see what all the fuss is about it being a Linux killer, allegedly.

Pretty much describes my Ubuntu experience. As for Windows 7 being fun, have had limited exposure to it, like I said already, maybe should get it anyway, just to see what the big deal is.

Coming from 10.04 and before, Unity takes a lot of getting used to (patience above all), ccsm is a must have but beware the Unity plugin and conflicts from other plugins with the Unity plugin.
 
So the obvious question for me since I do not follow *buntu any more, has Gnome been removed completely like speculated in the past?

I can officially say my version of Kubuntu came without gnome (since I am part of the *buntu eco-system). I also beleive they shipped Xubuntu without gnome (the bastards)... I think theyve being doing it for a while. Actually, Ive being using Kubuntu since Dapper Drake days and they didnt ship Gnome with Kubuntu back then either.

I imagine Gubuntu in the not to distant future.

Meh... Upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 on Friday. Grub failed to install into /dev/sda. Numerous attempts at fixing the problem didn't work. Downloaded the alternate install ISO (cause / is on a lvm2 RAID volume) and proceeded to format the / partition (/home is on a separate partition). Alternate ISO is broken. Broken dependencies in ubuntu-desktop don't allow it to complete the installation. Had to download minimal iso, and install via the Interwebs to get things working. lightgd wouldn't let me log in (the nice new login screen) so had to install gdm. all in all, not the greatest experience. Some nice changes to Unity, but far from polished. During all this, thought I'd try install Fedora 15 on another machine to see if it was any better. Much worse. Did a Yum update after install, and rebooted to a kernel panic. Seems like most distro's could do with some QA.

That sounds rough..... Yup, I'm definitely going to do a clean install rather.
 
Also been trying 11.10. There has been a reported bug in the proxy settings since the alpha release that they never got round to fixing - maybe too busy trying to make it look nicer. This is a problem for anything except home use.
 
Upgraded my netbook, Acerspire One, abosultely no problems. Installed fresh on my Dell Latitude D630 no problems.

In both cases all devices working properly including 3G and webcams. Overall very happy with it.

I would like to know what the difference is between Linux Ubuntu and Linux Mint? Which one is better to get?

Also can both of these use Wine?

Rather keep this thread for 11.10 specific stuff and post your question in another thread - either that or do a search, I'm sure this has been discussed before :)
