Anyone have a release date for Ubuntu 8.10? They usually release by the 23rd of the month if i'm not mistaken, but I can't seem to find a release date.

Can't find anything official, but otherwise all sources seem to suggest 30 October

go onto ubuntu's home page, there is a count down.

They are really milking the 8.10 title. should be 8.11! I really hope they have sorted out sound drivers this time. Do you have a list of features we can expect ?

The websites not hosted locally, i am sorta capped :P

I have a Nvidia 9600GT and it is not supported in 8.04, so I'm hoping it is in 8.10. I simply cannot get it configured correctly.

I have the same card, this is what I did...
Download the latest driver from NVidia:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Place it in your home folder(you should be able to navigate there in terminal later)

The latest driver is 173.14.12 so refresh your repos, use synaptic manager to find envy glx packages that have the corresponding driver version numbers(173.14.12) and install them, but be sure you have the "build-essential" and "NVIDIA-settings" packages installed as you'll need this later.

Now go CTRL+alt+f1 on your keyboard and login

Type:

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
Wait for the drop out of X11.

Go to the directory where you downloaded the newest Nvidia driver.

Code:
cd /home/(your name)
Then type:
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg1.run
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg1.run = name of the file you downloaded. If it's different, then make corrections)

Follow directions on the screen, Reboot(ctrl+alt+del)

Adjust you settings and reboot if necessary
Good Luck

Edit: I notice that there is a newer driver now though...

I hope my wireless connection will be more stable. In 8.10 beta I still had stability issues, to the point where I booted windows again (where it is rock solid). My wireless is important as I use it at office and home. My machine is a HP 8710w (laptop), with a 4965AGN wireless card. Hope somebody else has more joy.

I have an 8710p, which has a 4965ABG/BG adapter, and the iwlwifi driver works perfectly, so perhaps it's just a beta issue? I'm not using *ubuntu but I know 8.04 works on this particular laptop.

It should be. They focused on networking as well.

maybe branch out and try a different distro like Fedora. My HP 530 installed perfectly on F9. I thought I would have to fight with wireless. None of that.

Then again it maybe a kernel issue, in which case do a search to find out what driver linux uses for that wireless, see which kernel supports it, and then find out which distro comes with that kernel at the least.
