Ubuntu updates Hardy

Told you so, but no, I was told I was complaining too much.

I think it's a serious problem when barely three months after it's release there's enough updates to fill a CD.

Meh, I download the majority of the updates via local download anyway. Fortunately I have unlimited local! :D

But I will also download this new CD image in case I have to do a new install.

I must admit, I love Ubuntu but the size of the updates are killing my cap

There must be around 300-500MB of updates every month, its insane!

Just how many of the ~27000 files do you have?... I can understand that if you have a lot of them installed then you will have 300-500Mb of updates every month to install. But rather this than having Windows and not having any updates to sort out their useless software issues...

I'm with you on that man. Hmm they update (WINDOWS) but still doesn't fix the unstable software. Windows is very stable its just once you add your software it becomes so unsable. :(

Windows is pretty useless if you don't install anything. lol

Amongst the updates from having installed hardy heron are an updated OpenOffice suite - 63 MBs and Evolution mail program - 15MB

OpenOffice - I only have it for limited spreadsheet use and have not updated it - works fine.
Evolution mail program - I don't use so haven't updated it

Support

Ubuntu gives the kind of support m$ can only dream of. How long did Vista users have to wait for service pack 1? Well over a year. How long has Hardy Heron been out? Has it been 2 months? Next question, and this one is to the shame of m$, how much did their Vista users pay for their operating system? And how much did Ubuntu cost? Exactly! Now if a company that gives a killer operating system for free can provide better service than a company that has most of the market, at some point giants might have to take a tumble...

Guys, if you have an issue with all the updates, it eating your bandwidth, get a local only prepaid account from axxess..i mean, i think it costs 10 bucks a gig local, that is one pie...so for the cost of a pie you could get 3 months worth of 300 meg updates.

Anyone know of any uncapped local accounts? I might need one soon...

You're all trying to turn this into a Windows vs. Linux debate when it has nothing to do with Windows.

The question is; What does it say about the stability and quality of a software product when three months after it's released the size of the fixes and updates are larger than the initial release size?

The cd is not only the new updates - it is the updates integrated into the original iso;).

Deenem,

Simple answer. Unlike payware, freeware includes free updates that are not only bug fixes. This update will include improved, or newer versions of application software, not just the OS software. Open source programs are either constantly improved, or abandoned.

True, so if you want to start comparing windows vs linux updates (if you REALLY want to), then all the Windwos OS updates AND the all the new 3rd party software you download like updated drivers, opera, firefox, games, and....and whatever you guys use on windows....lol, its been a while since I used it. I think that would be a valid comparison...

ubuntu updates

I've been reading some of the comments attributed to the latest updates for ubuntu.
The new update is for those who have 6.06 and upgrading to 8.04. I've been running Ubuntu for the last month or so and absolutely loving it. At the end of the day the software is free and if you don't want to use it then don't. So for all those complaining about the update...just don't use Ubuntu...!!!

No problem with that, but if I'm looking for a *stable* OS/distro then apprarently Ubuntu is not going to be that for me.

All I want is something that I can install and use without having to bother with new updates and fixes everyday.

I think most 'normal' PC users want stability rather that 'newness' and if the Ubunutu people are going to win over the 'normal' users they're going to seriously rethink this constant update cycle.

I dont have a problem with stability :P So Im happy with the new updates with new features. I certainly dont lack stability and my uptime is pretty good. (I do sometimes break my desktop, but its nothing I cant fix)
