Uncapped ADSL: is Telkom wrong?

Do you think Telkom is wrong in not launching uncapped ADSL products?

It's nice when you have a landline monopoly. Then you can make statements like Uncapped is not needed etc. No need to gain customers as you get money from somewhere else...

Telkom is more useless than a umbrella in a tsunami...

Way to live with the times, Telkom. With a market share plummeting faster than Protea wickets in a world cup knockout game, you'd think that "innovation" and "thinking outside of the box" would be the order of the day. I guess your management's intellectual horizon only stretches about 2 inches beyond their own fat wallets, huh?

Good job. Idiots.

Anyway, this news just in: All car manufacturers will henceforth only produce 1.3l engines or below, since only 3% of people ever exceed 120km/h - so there's clearly no need for them.

Armstrong highlighted that only 3% of their current 9GB ADSL subscribers exceed their data cap, which tells them that the current account sizes are adequate for most of their subscribers

Just curious ... how much does it cost for the said 9GB cap? My impression is that their prices are not remotely competitive. So how serious are their subscribers about using data? I have a 1GB capped account (mainly for email) and almost never use it beyond 50% (except when Seacom goes wallop!). I have an account elsewhere and that's where I do my time on the internet. If necessary, I get my top ups there too. I cannot be bother with Telkom's inept attitude and ludicrous pricing.

Consequently they will always carry the "head-in-the-sand" idea that demand for uncapped is low.

If they don't want to launch uncapped, then they should launch offerings with larger caps.

I would love to go uncapped. Not because I would use copious volumes of data, but I wouldn't mind the idea of not having to worry about how close I am to my cap, to pace myself, etc. I seldom exceed my need for my 15GB account, but maybe I would if I had an uncapped account or larger capped account.

Larger capped accounts - at reasonably prices - make sense.

They are not willing to be guided by their customers! Proper market research is something they should consider and a new world will open to them. But for now, they are happy to deliver a crappy service to frustrated customers at inflated prices! A service which is not really what the customer would like but have no choice in!

So how does this work, do ISP's pay their respected wholesalers per GIG, or do they pay per MBps and then funnel their customers through those purchased pipes?

How exactly does this work?

this is about covering your rear

Hi Guys,

Telkom is a cash guzzler. We all know there is a ton of things wrong there.

So, when you don't know what you are doing, cover your arse! Telkom can't upgrade their network fast enough to cope with MWEB uncapped, let alone their own uncapped product. But thats not a problem, the independant survey said so!

So next time the official is at Telkom, the conversation could go:

Govt. Official: " My son says we must cancel our telkom account and get this new thing... um... what did he call it... " "uncapped baba?" "yes... this... this uncapped thing! what is uncapped? " ....

Telkom Manger: " Well... we did an independant study and found its these rich white people who want to take all our bandwith for themselvs. We can't have that! "

And I am not being funny... I think the survey even asked what race you are. And if they defend it by saying its a standard question these days... thats a half truth.

What is needed !

Actually, I would tend to agree with them
(but probably not based on their logic).
Uncapped shouldn't be their main focus,
large caps (say 50/100/200 gig caps) with faster connection speeds is ACTUALLY what I think the market needs.

Agreed !

Lets face it TRUE "uncapped" is a myth. :erm:

What Telkom need are HIGHER and CHEAPER speeds and a decent UNSHAPED cap -- say about 30GB. ( A reasonable ammount for any user )

Take over the VC Mugabe Special -- perhaps more appropriate for Telkom , and give the "surfers" more midnight GIGS. ( All the old grannies -- and normal working people in bed already )

Let the "uncapped" 24 hr download abusers go elsewhere
or
Make a special package for them and CHARGE appropriately. :D

Zero to Hero in a few EASy steps. ;) :D

Please people, let's not give anyone a reason to go back to telkom, I'm happy to see people jumping ship for better products. Telkom, you are right about uncapped. It's terrible for business.

I don't want a cap! Ever!

By not having uncapped broadband they lost me as customer, now on Afrihost for two month and don't have to worry about my 9GB limit.

Increase the cap from 9GB to 250GB at the same price, and I'll happily switch to a capped account!

sa companies policy take the south African general public for ride so we can expand to other countries... as long an industry does not have proper regulation and competition. Also an industry that is regulated by people who don't know **** about how to regulate and industry (politics (job description if your good lair and are able to convince people that you know what you doing, while able to pass the buck to your fellow politician and to guarantee the rich folks interest) then this is the place for you....

Telkom needs someone like cellc to force them to lower their prices.... like how VC reacted to cell c promotion...
how neofail hoped to do business without access to copper line makes, me wonder why are they nly crying for access now
you should made sure you had copper access when you entered the market....

We (telkom) make a lot of money forcing other companies to offer uncapped over our grossly overpriced IPC product. Why must we(telkom) drop our data pricing when we have such an awesome cash cow in the form of IPC?

But please, don't be sad, we will be offering 20Mbps lines in the not too distant future.
