Same as IBM

Telkom, in the 60's IBM said there is at most a market for 6 computers in the world, you guys are one and the same!!! A..holes!

No mistakes MW. I fully support your point of view - I also prefer quality over quantity.
Unfortunately there will always be the abusers with the malema attitude of entitlement...

I agree.

Don't know what everybody is bitching about as the majority say they will never use Telkom anyway; there's plenty of uncapped suppliers out there for them to choose from.

I'd prefer Telkom to come up with a wider range of capped options at decent prices - 50GB @ R10/GB would be nice (but unlikely).

I have been using Afrihost's 50GB high unshaped capped account since December, moved from 4mb MWEB uncapped, and I am more than happy. I get my full line speed (6mbps) all the time - discounting the times that Seacom is down of course.
My average usage is 45GB per month, so 50GB is sufficient for me. If prices were to come down further, I would definitely move onto a larger capped account - things do get a bit close towards the end of the month.
I do miss 'not having to check my usage' when I was on MWEB uncapped; but the shaping was killing me.

So I would say high capped unshaped accounts are the answer. There should be small packages available as well for those users that use less than 5GB per month.

Telkom again proving that they have no understanding of their clients needs, their own products, or the use of the internet. In saying this
Armstrong highlighted that only 3% of their current 9GB ADSL subscribers exceed their data cap, which tells them that the current account sizes are adequate for most of their subscribers.
and if they truly believed that, then surely there would be no danger to Telkom's profits if they charged 9 x Rand/gig (not sure what Telkom charges per gig) for an uncapped account and make it available to the public. Using their logic 97% of all takers will not use more than 9 gigs and therefore their profits will be well protected, with only 3% potentially making full use of an uncapped account.

They really need to find different excuses for shafting the public, these ones are getting very old and tired...maybe they need fresh and new spin-doctors.

Where is Web Africa's 2cents? Shame...

BTW Monsieur Gian Visser: You should realize that because your bandwidth is supplied by IS, that this is the primary reason why uncapped users tend to migrate back to high-cap packages instead. You're lucky they don't leave you for MWEB uncapped because (even though Seacom goes down once or twice a month) they're usually up and running with adequate bandwidth after 30 min or so. Unlike IS who just falls over.

Actually, I would tend to agree with them (but probably not based on their logic). Uncapped shouldn't be their main focus, large caps (say 50/100/200 gig caps) with faster connection speeds is ACTUALLY what I think the market needs.

I partially agree with you. But, as my uncapped usage is currently around 80GB per month, I would not settle for anything less than 200GB.

Telfail

OK, assuming the "research" is not just spin - how much are they paying their research division? I could do a better job myself. OK, but we all know the real thing is they want to milk their clients as long as possible.

Something to also take in to account is the fact that many Telkom clients are stuck in 2yr contracts, so the reason they have not migrated is there are penalties. There is not a nice way to keep track of their usage, so they are generally very careful to make sure they don't exceed the cap and have to go through a painful process of dealing with Telkom customer care to get more overpriced bandwidth.

Just having to call Telkom is a good enough reason to not exceed your cap.

There is a market for uncapped as there is for high quality capped. The latter has been catered for, now get your arse in gear for the former!

Why not look at a well priced large cap with decent quality for daytime with uncapped overnight? Then users can get the best of both worlds.

I agree. I'm not much of a fan for these uncapped packages. They all suck, but the value is better than buying raw bandwidth. If 100-200 gig can just become reasonably priced. I'd love to use my 10Mbps line (unlike cell-c's fake 40Mbps stuff)

My friend has a 5gb telkom account, and he also has a 4mbps uncapped account...

Telkom usage for the month so far 18mb, mweb usage for the month so far 154GB. Someone doesn't know how to do their homework it seems...

As some others mentioned earlier, most people who don't exceed their telkom cap most probably have another cheap capped or uncapped account and they use the telkom account as a backup...

In a one word answer to the question: is Telkom wrong?

Affirmative

whats up with showing the profile pictures of the people relating to the news story?
I just want to read the news, not have someone stare at me while doing it!

Can be done for a small monthly fee. Just visit a Telkom Direct shop with your account details (don't phone the call centre).
