Uncapped ADSL prices start to decrease

Just got back from Hong Kong. For a few rands a month you get your ADSL line plus free wifi access throughout the whole city (their wifi even covers their subway system and you dont lose connection wherever you go). You can get from 1.5Mb all the way to 1Gb fibre to your home for around R2500 a month. Their promotional package is the 30Mb line for around R300 a month.

Everyone is getting excited about ther seacom cables and how awesome broadband "might" be here in 2012, if you want a better life for yourself your real option is just to move overseas.

Vodacom Update.

So on Tuesday I'm minding my business when the phone rings. It's a lady from Vodacom's customer care wanting to know how I would rate my contact with their business department. Needless to say I told her that I was still waiting for a sales person to call me :D

Poor chic apologises and says somebody will contact me.

Half an hour later and a lady from the Cape Town office calls me and starts apologising for the fact that nobody has contacted me. She tells me how all their sales people are off at a sales conference, but that somebody will contact me later that day. Seems the sales leads all end up in the regional manager's inbox, but since he was away, they weren't being acted on.

Well, it's now more than a week since my first contact with Vodacom and I'm still waiting for the phone to ring.

Maybe something will happen the next time the customer care lady calls to ask about my experience.

And this from a company that's getting ready to list on the stock exchange...

got uncapped wireless now, don't care about telkom anymore. thanks xnet

SAOL offers very competitive prices on its fixed IP ADSL access service which provides users with always available flat-rated internet access. SAOL's all-in-one 384Kbps fixed IP service costs R499 per month, which includes ADSL access (typically priced at R152 per month), a static IP address and unlimited Internet usage.

This offer is subject to the signing of a 24 month contract. A set-up fee of R1500.00 is applicable and the preconfigured router is on loan for the duration of the use of service.

(R499 x 24) + R1,500 = R13,476
This service is going to cost you at least R13,476.

That's another way to put it. :D

We are getting the 4MB Vodacom Uncapped... will let you all know how it runs...

Just tested the Axxess 384K uncapped, and we were getting 3.5-3.8Mbps outside the 8 to 8 window. Very good...

I will be comparing the line with both our current 4MB IS Uncapped Routers that are setting us back just over 13K per month for both. If the Vodacom one performs, we will be replacing the other two as well and possibly add in one more to give us a total of 4 x 4MB Vodacom.

Just called them in Durban.Somewhat-clueless lady informs me:

1.24 months contract-wouldn't sign 24 minute contract personally...

2.R1500.00 "connection fee"."Connect what?"I ask.She doesn't know...."I already have a DSL line".It matters not.SO-add another R62.50 per month(R1500 divided by 24 months)
Total cost(assuming that's the lot)=R561.50/month
Caveat emptor.
Regards from Cape Town

That is not great...The contract sucks, the activation fee sucks. But hey, a couple of years ago that would not have got you entry level capped ADSL...So, here's hoping for better things in the future.

You need to understand that countries like China have a massive dependance on local only traffic. If everyone had a 1Gb fibre then imagine what there international bottle neck would be, when they only have about 6Tb if I am not mistaken.

There are millions of people in China and Hong Kong using the internet, and I have been informed that in Shangai you can get basic 100Mb line as a standard in most apartments. The entire city is networked, so if you have an office in on part and you live in another part, you can easily connect throught the MPLS to the office and get upto 100MB through put.

Now China also censors the internet with almost 60% of international traffic being blocked. So that is one way to limit how much international backbone is being used. But for a country that doesn't acknowledge copyright, I am sure that they have a booming P2P community.

hi ppl, anything new around this subject? Looking for an uncapped line as it has now become obvious the only way I can satisfy my bb needs is to have uncapped, even if it is only 384 or 512 to start with....but if someone knows of a deal good enough on 4M, I seriously would like to know pls
