Uncapped ADSL prices: Telkom versus MWEB

you hit the nail on the head, wipe out the competition with "subsidized" lowest pricing. when they are gone. ramp up the price to the "real" price.
internet today is not how wide your pipe is it is about how much data you are allowed to push thru the pipe. Uncapped with words like throttle, shaped is not uncapped, it's a lie. The general public must be more concerned about how much data they are allowed to use, not fast they can go, and yes also latency. And why when the WORLD Wide Web means the globe, do we in SA have international internet and national internet.
If all you want to do is look at what the SA Government is up to, then you don't care, but when you need to know about the whole world we need to slow you down
 
I can't seem to find the new products on MWEB's website?? Doesanyone have a link to it?

Remember how they slurped up most of Telkom's 30% discount on the > 4mbps accounts last time, and this time instead of competing with their existing packages they introduced a crippled product albeit at a lower price. The industry leader has become the follower.

Well, I suppose they're entitled to run their business, I just hate that they're telling us they're doing us a favour when they aren't. :erm:
 
if they giving us crippled products, then they must charge crippled money too. i am glad my speed are running at 1 megabyte per second. now this is how the internet supposed to be. download an hd movie or streaming and watching it instantly. not speeds of 200k or so.

My point was that no one knows how Telkom and Mweb products are going to stack up against each other so pretty much everything mentioned in this thread (and the several others on the same topic) are pure speculation at this point.

Simple logic dictates that the "average" usage for any product is, at most, your max throughput on your line speed/contention ratio. (So 50Gb odd a month on a 4Mb line with a contention ratio of 20). Probably lower, but if it's any higher then your ISP is running at a loss (or at least cutting into thier target profits).

Personally I'll wait till I see what kind of performance people are getting before I'll consider downgrading - if people are getting 100Gb a month without being throttled, I'm game. (Telkom's less than stellar pings to Europe take them out of the running for my $$$ at the moment).

Not most... All of it. And that is why we are angry. When they got a big break they dropped all the prices except for 4mbps and said it is already competitively priced. This made me angry and I moved over to Afrihost. Enjoyed a few months of Utopia and then their stupid move to MTN. Gave them notice and will be back at TI where I started with ADSL. Who knows, maybe I will discover that the MWeb premium product is actually priced correctly and might move back to them. But I have this feeling that for now I will be happy with TI.
 
I'm using the 1mbps service so am I right that all this means nothing to me? Telkom and MWeb priced the same and no new offering from MWeb.

Competition law and economics has its ups and downs

Is it possible that Naspers will violate SA competition regulations while watching Telkom get nailed for violating competition laws in yesteryear? Most definitely and it would be high hypocrisy and part of business, and they are likely to find sheets out of Telkom's playbook to avoid being held accountable.

But lets assume that Naspers does want to play nice a fair and so on: surely they are entitled to have content servers which are accessible to their customers and anybody with whom they sign a nondiscriminatory peering agreement. My guess is that they will get away with it so long as there is no LLU.

It could just as easily be that retail is subsidising wholesale.

Actually, as far as is possible, our input costs are allocated to our products, and we provide more return than the IRR (internal rate of return).

I personally believe SAIX ADSL is subsidising IPC, and thus since we are the very large majority of SAIX ADSL, I suspect we are subsidising IPC.

Marketing: I don't see any reference on telkom.co.za to any other ISP except TI.

I don't see why Telkom should have an obligation to advertise competitors services.

And, wait, are you saying uncapped is unsustainable? Or was that what MWEB was saying by releasing these non-uncapped products?

Of course, I would like to point out that if you want a throttled uncapped service, you may as well take one of our soft-cap products :-p.
 
Are the telkom and mweb premium accounts comparable? Or is the telkom premium equivalent to the the mweb throttled?
 
i want to change to telkom but mweb's email only offer is pathetic. 55pm for only 100mb account?
and like 250 for 2gb account?
 
I have two 1mb uncapped data accounts with MWEB. Cancelled the one this morning (the SO's) and tomorrow she is on 2mb uncapped brought to you with the compliments of Abs...Telkom:)

Still on 1mb myself. My attenuation 63 and 31 and hers 11 and 12 :o

Unfortunately it's subject to a 1 month notice so I'm still paying for the month of Feb but no matter.

According to Telkom the order has been submitted and will be automatically be instated today.

Will see today.

I just phoned MWEB to move our business from 1mbps uncapped premium to 2mbps uncapped standard. They said that we used 21 - 27GB per month over the last 4 months so the package would NOT suite us. I was told that if one uses more than 20GB, one is likely to fall into the category of high usage and be throttled to 192kbps for the rest of that month. OUCH!

I wish this were not true, as we would love to make use of the free line speed upgrade that telkom gave.

As stated above, I use 60+GB per month on 1mbps uncapped and am yet to experience throttling.

But they do not differentiate between standard and premium at that speed so possibly why.
