Well that's all fine and dandy, but I don't really care about the performance of the services I'm *not* using, I care about the performance of the service I *am* using. A polished turd is still a turd.
 
Mweb says they shape the network, but then why do they still send abuse warnings? Surely if Mweb is shaping their network, the speeds people are able to reach are the ones the network can handle? Just doesn't make sense

MWEB send abuse letters to those who purposefully bypass the shaping.

I don't take very seriously the defense of 'I didn't know', as generally a tech savvy person would be the sort of person to do such a thing, and as such, I am sure they would have made some effort to examine MWEB's AUP.
 
If i purposefully bypassed the shaping i'd agree with you, but running torrents using vuze/utorrent, and NZB's using sabnzbd, while not encrypting the downloads, or using a vpn, or trying anything funny... That is the issue i have

Sorry, re-reading your post, I see it has happened to you. I'd be interested in what the MWEB reps have to say about your situation, to be honest. If it is as you say, then I also take issue with it, certainly. Provided I don't bypass the shaping, I FULLY expect MWEB to manage my load.

I had long discussion with the abuse department, an extract out of one of the emails (explaining why i got the warning:

The usage for this account appear to indicate continuous bulk transfers, sufficient enough to be regarded as (according to the MWEB AUP-Connectivity Services) “..create an unusually large burden on our network..OR, .. continuously uploading or downloading…OR, etc etc”

I suppose this is the 24 hour thing...

Which I strongly, STRONGLY disapprove of.

I fully expect to be able to leave my torrents going 24/7, if MWEB wants to shape 'em, fine, but why should it be my priority to self-throttle, on an uncapped product?

Further details withstanding, I'm with you on this one, unacceptable (although within MWEB's rights, given their terms).

I have been with Mweb and their service is 1st class. Even when they shape it is barely noticeable for me. Somedays I achieve an average download of 250 kb/s for P2P on a 4 Meg line during a weekday.

I do admit i did a huge amount of data, about 405 gigs, in 16 days, but if i had know that mweb didnt really mean a fully uncapped account i wouldn't of done the amount of data that i did. And plus it was my first month with the account, i had some speed frustration to get out of my system.

I just wish Mweb would do what they said they do, shape the account to manage the performance of the network. But i guess i am also to blame for thinking i can download as much as i did
 
I seem to notice though, that most people who get nailed, always mention they are using newsgroups...

I don't have my torrents going 24/7 all month, but often have them going for days at a time.

Speed is more than sufficient, and I've got zero complaints in that regard.

I have been with Mweb for very long now and at times I pulled about 500GB a month. Lately its between 200GB and 300GB a month and I cannot recall when last I saw them shape my traffic. I get torrents at 400+ kb/s on a 24/7 basis, even in business hours!

No way in hell I'm moving to another ISP, I don't care if this is costing me R1k a month, it is definitely worth the price. Mweb FTW!
 
Mweb isn't significantly more expensive than any of the other providers, especially when looking at the accounts I have. I'm happy to a pay a little bit extra for quality and consistency.

I've met her. She's nice. But be that as it may - I rarely if ever feel that I'm being choked. MWeb has given me a good experience. They are becoming a bit pricey though as they used to be before Rudi decided to shake things up. Wish somebody with the guts to provide a good service would do that again.

And oh yeah - She's married lol
