Uncapped ADSL throttling not cool reckons MWEB

Lol, they are starting to feel the competition.

Shaping is worse than throttling IMO. At least you know what your limit is before you are throttled, but shaping can happen at any time and it's virtually guaranteed during the day.

I'd like to take that lady out for coffee to discuss the pros and cons of each :D

Surely this image shouldnt be used.

Very Misleading.

//on topic
I am happy with my mweb uncapped, but a slight decrease in prices would be welcomed with open arms

“MWEB doesn’t throttle but rather shapes its network which means that the ISP manages the network and allows certain traffic like browsing the Internet, online gaming, YouTube, e-mail and VoIP to take preference.”

Sometimes my network is so well managed that my browsing is accelerated up to 7kb/s ...

My buddy that got his MWeb account cancelled without any warning whatsoever would have a few choice words in response to this article.

Yes, he was in blatant violation of the AUP - but he was blissfully unaware of the existence of an AUP (I explained it to him when I got his panicked phone call on a Sat morning). One minute downloading the web and the next his line is a dead duck - with no option to fix the situation on his part.

Shocked that any company would just blatantly stop a paid-up service without contacting the client first. Surely MWeb has contact details on hand (sending a warning to the email linked to the MWeb account does not count. Most people I know do not use their ISP provided email accounts).

Agreed competition is good... he got sorted at a competing ISP and is now downloading the web in smaller bite size chunks within AUP limits. Smiles all the way.

Whoa.... this sounds like the article a couple of weeks ago where Vodacom and MTN tried to justify their higher prices by trying to throw up some network reliability mumbo jumbo...

Mweb: Get a AUP letter after 350GB to 400GB on 4meg line
Afrihost: Get throttled after 450GB+ on 10 meg line for same price as mweb 4meg...

My only annoyance right now is that despite M-Web saying that throttling is worse than shaping, the fact is that the M-Web service level right now is FAR from ideal. Downloads over HTTP are probably running at 60-70% of my line speed, and only over multiple threads, with single threads being probably closer to 30% of line speed. Streaming is incredibly poor *most* of the time (although sometimes it works fine) with YouTube and Game Trailers being particularly good examples. FORGET trying to download over any other service (BitTorrent, and so on) - there you're looking at maybe only 10-15% of line speed.

I would like to point out that my gripes generally revolve around international access. I don't use the local web all that much.

Oh and this is a 4mb/s Uncapped account.

Damn! That chick is hot! A whole lot hotter than Rudi was. I now want to make love to my ISP

I think the guys who are throttling are also shaping. You get what you pay for here I believe at the moment.

LOL @ know your limits with uncapped. That's funny. Well here's the deal. For last month on IS, I very seldom got more than 100-200k on torrents. Mweb gives me 300-400k after hours. Which ever way you look at it, Mweb are beating the competition in my books I am able to do more per month on Mweb than with the competition, and I'm able to have a more consistently stable line while working.

Sorry Mweb -price does it for me. I moved to AH and am more than happy saving R200+ a month.

I did too until day 7, I got my money back. That said, I don't pay, my office does.

Afrihost 10 mbps uncapped costs R530 per month?

You haven't been following the competition much. I was getting 500k on an IS account. And inconsistent - up and down.

You don't think there's a limit with Mweb? Your limit is the time that you can get full speed. With throttling there is a threshold, after which your speed is reduced, but no time limit. No consumer uncapped account is going to give you full speed 24/7/365 - there are pros and cons to each of them.
