What kills it is the contract and throttling. Really if the first 200 GB was unlimited it would have been half decent with the modem but standalone it should be no more than about R500.

I checked out Rain on Hello Peter and it's shocking the amount of negative comments. I will be careful if I'm you before I choose them perhaps????

You show me how you stream any movie at a decent ratio at 2mbs. It's like 2005 speeds, 14yrs ago, throttling one back to the stone age. Uncapped at that speed is a joke, u can basically browse at that speed only, reading articles, and checking out emails etc. Wtf???????

Of course it's two different business models, that's not the point. The point is that 10mbs LTE is a bad SHT deal, period. Any decent speed would be 40mbs+ which many or most LTE deals are, that's the point of consideration, but I guess for the vast majority of SA whose not on internet yet, it's would be OK, in other words the 3rd world portion of SA lololol!!!!!

Nobody is saying this is a good deal (in fact it is pretty crap) but it is uncapped and, to be fair, at least Telkom are upfront about the throttling policy.

Would be better to read the mybb comments. Cool Ideas by far has more negative stories on here than Rain.
 
I really only stream. What speeds do you need to stream full HD content from YouTube and Netflix? If it is less than 2mbps then I'll be happy with Telkom's offer. If not, then I'll view it as capped unfortunately.

It's more about consistency and overall speed than what's quoted. Unfortunately none of the mobile operators have convinced me yet that they offer a service that will work with streaming without any hiccups.

Best you will get on 2mbps is SD or less
 
I am actually considering this on my current use case, unless one of you can put me off.

I live in a township and there is no fibre or ADSL, only 4G. Doubt fibre will come there in the next 2 years.

I currently have the Telkom 100G for R1005 plus the Rain uncapped off peak (11pm-6pm) for R250 for a total of R1255. The Telkom was a 24 months contract which is passed now so I believe it is just rolling over.

We only get speeds of around 2-4Mbps anyway. And we use the 100GB of the Telkom plus about another 100GB from Rain, though that will go down now as I used to work from home and now have office fibre.

So this deal could be good for us - our monthly bill could go down to R899 from R1255 (R356 saving), and we'd stay within the 10mpbs cap for most if not all of the month and we don't anyway get more than 10mbps at the moment. Even the 4 and then 2 Mbps throttle wouldn't be a big change.

Is there anything I'm missing? Are there any other companies I should try?

With all the comments and reasoning, here is the best possible reasoning for Telkom...... To gain and keep subscribers happy as peaches will be this "Best Deal package"

LTE Uncapped R800 per month, no contract, on month to month basis, no shaping, no throttling.

Then... Only then Telkom..... Will it be a " Best deal package"
Provide this to your subscribers and you will see your subscribers soar with many many happy customers.

Enough said.... So hope Telkom sees this post and gives a service at an affordable price that 10's of thousands will sign up for! I'll be one of them.

I hope they don't bring out your package until after a significant network upgrade, I'd like to have working internet, rather than some R800pm for some maxed out, slow, POS network.
