Hi, I know there are posts about this, but recently getting Telkom to upgrade me from ADSL to VDSL 20Mbps was a big hassle and now they refuse to upgrade me to 40Mbps. I know I will not be able to get the full 40Mbps but even getting 30Mbps is fine. Do they have certain criteria regarding the possibility to upgrade? I know I am 1400m from the exchange so that is probably the biggest problem. My line is with Web Africa.

Telkom has a unconfirmed policy that if your DP falls outside of a 850m radius from the exchange a 40Mbps VDSL application will not be allowed or if you managed to place the order the order will not be completed it will be canceled.

Telkom rep once told me that it is a icasa restriction where Telkom can not sell a product the user can not get. A bunch of bs I think because you get many of the same situations.

All that said I managed before to get a 40Mbps VDSL application approved even though I was like 1.3km from the exchange by placing 7 orders and finally a lady completed the order. Was syncing @ 36Mbps.

You will notice that the coverage map will only show 20Mbps VDSL available if your DP is outside the 850m radius even though your line can handle more.

Unfortunately it will be hard to get someone to complete the order as I would imagine they can get in trouble.

I figured something like that, maybe if I am persistent it might go through. The only reason I started asking for 40 Mbps is because on the coverage map it says I am able to get 40 VDSL, but I am sure that's just an error on Telkom's side.

Yeah then they looking at your line stats and reckon no no. But if you keep on bugging them and placing orders I'm sure you will eventually succeed.

When you did that you can always log a fault for a noisy phone and ask the technician if he can help you just to stabilize your line by putting it on the best available cable. They can do it if they actually feel up for the job.

Thanks for the advice, its just sad that Telkom is not willing to at least try it and see how it works for me. Guess they don't want to do business.
