I'm trying to help my cousin sort out his ADSL. Sometimes he is getting quite a lot of desyncing, even more so when the weather is bad and then some days it will be fine again. I checked his stats on the router and I'm guessing it's noise related as the SNR is quite low. The router is a Billion 7300GRA, line stats as follow:
DSP Firmware Version DMT FwVer: 3.10.17.0_A_TC, HwVer:T14F7_5.0
DMT Status Up
Operational Mode ADSL G.DMT
Upstream 512 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 8.0 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 30.0 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 55.0 db
Also something interesting to note, when he switches off his HTPC in the lounge, the router would lose sync as well and then resync again. Any ideas on how to get the line more stable, without having to drop the speed. Can one report a fault to Telkom to come and check the line? Could it be the internal phone line wiring generating the noise. Will a different ADSL router help?
