Upgrade from XP to Vista?

Step 1: create a partition for Vista, a big one because Vista is Huuuge..
Step 2. install Vista on said paritition...watch as your entire world falls apart. Watch how it finds none of your devices - even on new hardware.
Step 3. Delete old XP partition and Vista too
Step 4: Install Linux

Show Steve Balmer: .!..

In the end what I notice most about vista is how it has become more like nannyware, which really really annoys me. Otherwise its like XP with a new skin.
 
Vista reminds me of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, darn prompts when you run anything admin related "is that your final answer?" :D

Either what your saying is true, whcih means you wont have problems in Vista, or you hardly notice your problems with XP: say your pc/explorer crashes 3 times a month, in Vista, it'l crash 3 times in six months and also tell you why it crashed and will search for a solution online.

You can turn off the nannyware. If I ever create a profile for someone else to use my pc, that feature will remain active for them.

besides the prettyness, PLENTY of things have been improved:
*searching is instant
*alt+tab/alt+winkey into desktop
*instantly usable after you log in, no waiting..ever.
* looks up drivers for you online, and installs them, I have yet to see XP achieve that.
* taskbar preview
I've mentioned all this in another thread. Vista is worth the upgrade, if your pc is fast enough, also yes..there are hardware issues, but is that Microsofts fault or the crappy company's fault who made your hardware?

I agree with the general sentiment that Vista is a bit of a dissapointment, it could have been better (Bluetooth, Copying should be more like CopyHandler/TotalCopy, etc)...but that s what SP's are for..
 
The whole problem with Vista [and why going from XP is considered a downgrade] is because if you use the EXACT SAME PC which had XP on...how much do you GAIN ? . I've not heard ANYWHERE that games run FASTER or BETTER . XP is very stable as far as i'm concerned.

So what exactly does Vista bring to the table? DX10 ? [it's not getting rave reviews] Shiny new interface? [bleh] .

Just getting the SAME performance is not sufficient for me to get Vista. I will only get Vista once i physically can not run a piece of software/hardware on XP anymore.

Being forced to upgrade your hardware and THEN saying "Vista is running faster" ..is kinda absurd if you think about it.

you are completely right..Vista is a little better than XP, and your games are likely to run slower [where is WKJ? beanie so he can laugh at me for making that statement] but if you have a fast pc, you'll hardly notice.

My point if ever I had one, is that it has small little things that are better to me, and once you dont have those things..once you go back to an XP machine...those small improvements become huuge.

Also XP looks dated, and its not dated enough to be retro [now that was a mac-poser statement:p]. I like pretty.

XP hardly ever crashed for me (by hardly ever I mean I can't remember the last time or even 1 specific time that it did).

So far vista hasn't crashed on me.

Like I said before - I am using vista now, but if it wasn't given to me for free and I actually had to buy it, I would still be using XP.

Everything that vista does now (from a user's perspective) could have been added to xp via as service pack.

Its a minor improvement at best.

Games also ran slower on xp when xp first came out compared to win 98 and 2000.:)

Vista is great if you have a fast pc. It's not good when you a average pc.

Very well put.

But it seems as if hardware won't get any speed boosts at this stage.
 
If you consider the change from alt-tab to desktop instead of win-d as a significant new feature of Vista, you're clearly grasping at straws. :D

But, whatever works for you.

yes I was..I'm on an XP machine right now and cant think of all my favourite doodads..but it is a nice feature..makes everything feel more integrated.:o
 
IC go into control panel user accounts

click turn user account on/off and untick that option reboot and goodbye nannyware

i cannot explain what it is about vista i love, at first i hated it but once i got all my programs working and actually started using it as my main OS i loved it and will never go back to xp

IIRC OS/2 was able to alt-tab to desktop... will check it out and confirm :)
