Right. PC needs upgrading.

Currently Athlon X2 3800+ s939, 2gb corsair ddr1, 8600GT, Gigabyte k8n-sli, 320gb sata, dvdrw sata, Aopen 400W, Thermaltake case

Would like to play most new games, ie COD w@w 1680x1050

Budget: tight

Heres what I have come up with so far:

-Intel Pentium E5200 - Dual Core 2.5GHz R1041 @landmark
-GIGABYTE® "S Series" G31 & ICH7 Express Chipset - Socket LGA775 R780 @ Prophecy (In my experience not worth buying top end board unless overclocking or have extreme hardware)
-Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 - XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 R600 @ landmark
-Inno3D 9800GT 512MB nVidia GeForce 9800GT GPU R1750 @ landmark (would prefer 4850, but its quite a bit more $ atm)

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Looks good brawler and you can still overclock your cpu on that chipset, not as well obviously but it can be done.

COD will run really well as would wow.

no wow! w@w = world @ war ;)

maybe i'll try crysis to although won't expect much.
Need a decent pc again, R700 xbox games killing me.

You probably don't need Corsair RAM if you're not planning on overclocking, but at that price you might as well go for it :)

Looks good :)

Its like R80 diff..

My current machine has been through hell(10000 power cuts, 1000 odd bf2 hours etc) and its still working well for its age, so going to stick with Gigabyte and Corsair.

no squeezeway on that processor? ..... when I switch using a dual core now after getting my E8400, it's like using a P2 :o:D

I dont know hey. I have a T8300 2.4Ghz and 2gb ram in my HP 6710b notebook and I seriously have a hard time telling the difference between it and my old amd.
Are you sure its not just other component on that dual core slowing it down?ie ide hdd? The new "pentium" dual cores are basicly identical to C2D, besides for cache and bus speed.

isn't AMD known for having better performing chips anyway? or was that only in the past? (/me is hardly any type of expert :o:D)

Not since intel released Conroe. unfortunately.

Pentium and core 2 dual cores are miles apart in performance, You can tell a core 2 from a pentium with ease.

Brawler that 9800gt will no doubt play crysis man, i played crysis on a 3850 with everything low and i got like 25-30 FPS, although i did drop it from 1680 x 1050 to 1024 x 786 not the best option for my monitor but crysis is playable on that card at lower resolution.

Personally brawler i would see if i could get 4 gigs of memory, cheaper memory, i would rather have 4 gig cheap memory than 2 gig quality brand, crysis goes well over the 2 gig mark even in xp.

That cpu will more than handle anything you throw at it. Stick with gigabyte good idea because they are the best i rate :).

I was just using it as an analogy between a Core2Duo and a Dual Core ...... ;):D

Do you realize the E5200 is cassified as a pentium?

I definitely agree, quantity is a lot better when it comes to RAM

Brawler, Did you have a look at the AMD GPU's?

And maybe squeeze a few more bucks out for this one?

My R0.02

Rather that and see if you can get a 4850. Should last you longer since you seen like the person that only upgrades when they need to.

If your board supports pci-e you might as well get the gpu now then the rest afterwards.

What psu are you using? Might not be able to keep up.

His board does support PCI-e. Also, there is a AMD 6000+ in the clasifies for R600.

AMD 6000+ - R600
ATI 3870 - R1500
1Gig Ram 667 @ R139 x 2 - R280

All in classifieds and you good to go for a while again...
