Upgrading from 384 - 4MB - What should I know?

Line Speed

Thanks to the OP for opening this topic.

My SO who is a teacher has suddenly discovered a couple of sites that are heavy on video and other large file size data -- mostly BBC and other educational stuff.

We are also terribly frustrated on 384 with buffering etc etc.

I am also one of the very lucky ones that received the WA MyBB special offer -- MANY THANKS WA.

We also have a Telkom DoBroadband Level 2 All-Access( Five Gb ) plus a normal closer plan ( Does keep the costs down )

I am running both accounts on one ADSL line -- thanks Cisco.

The news that the WA offer also applies to a faster line speed is VERY encouraging.:D

Sadly the Telkom ADSL line speed issues still come into the picture -- what we need is NOT more data
( we are not really heavy data users trying to download the whole internet :D ) but MORE SPEED -- 384 is Dinosaur balls :(

Unfortunately Telkom does not seem to have a package to suit this type of user

Does anyone know a way to upgrade your line speed within the same Telkom package ? -- without spending next months groceries .......

I am led to believe that Telkom offer an ADSL "Wholesale" package for resellers at heavily discounted prices.

Telkom OLO Wholesalers

PLEASE Telkom give us a way to get more speed -- without having to sell our Grannies -- or having to resort to "WINSTON" stunts.

Grimspoon asked: "So I wanted to know, other than the extra +- R250 on my telkom account, what else am I in for?"
My experience has been that you pay for the 4meg line, but what they actually delivers is the 384 service! And, if you dare complain about it, you are treated like a child!

I totally agree, the costs involved in upgrading both line and account is crazy.

I wouldn't have done it had I not been on the WA account, it just gets to expensive.

What I don't get is: So what if you have a faster line and pay the same for your, lets say, 5 GB account. How does you dl that 5GB faster affect them?

They should actually encourage that as you would end up buying more data from them.

I can however understand that uncapped lines would cost more.

Well from my experience in the last week with my upgrade it is far, far from 384 service. My speeds are through the roof. Local downloads shot from 30kb/s to 500kb/s.

It was the best thing I did! Feels like I have gone from a 56K modem to ADSL :D

Dude, I've been on a friends 4MB and they also have problems with youtube vids sometimes. It's uncapped shaping that can be a major enemy of speeds with stuff like youtube. If you want good service then try out cell 4's 3g service in your area on your phone. If you get decent speeds, then grab the dongle and get the better per MB rates. (won't be uncapped though)

so the last time telkom upgraded the lower speed was in 2006...its been close to 5 years and still no word of an upgrade? :O
seriously, the line rental cost is just waaay too high

Well, we moved over to a 4mb line with an increase to 9gig international and 30gigs local. The change has been absolutely great. Before when playing online (with 384KB) this was the only activity "permitted" online otherwise lag would cause me to commit murder. With the upgrade to 4mb I can watch youtube vids at demand (very little buffering), both my bros can play dota, and my sis can facebook with no probs.

Using Pada's traffic splitting app I also make the best use of my local bandwidth from last month by using the work around that allows you to dial into your local and international telkom accounts simultaneously. Despite fears of disconnects, I have for four months run my full local bandwidth up without any disconnects. Just wish I had more international though... buying intl. after using all the international is really irritating. But I am happy.

I just checked this package on telkom's website and it says it excludes line rental? :O

Would love to upgrade myself .... but the telkom prices just need to come down a little first ...
