UPS recommendations for 1 PC + router

that would be awesome. then the router can like stay on. then keeping the telly on is also possible?

It depends on the type of TV you have...if it is a CRT type of TV then you might not be able to power it unless you have a high power output UPS with large batteries to handle the runtime you want out of it.

If it is a LCD type you might get away with it but it won't last you for more than 20-30minutes - again the battery capacity is of importance when it comes to runtimes.

Someone knowledgeable should write up a generator guide that can be stickied.

You can make one up yourself...if you have an electrical hardware store close by they can supply the male kettle cord type plug in that picture and you can wire it yourself to a multiplug bar.

I just took a PC power chord and a large multiplug, clipped them both, wired them together and sealed with lots of tape and used as is. The multiplug powers everything related to my PC other than the power to the tower, which I figured may as well connect directly to the UPS seeing as the necessary cable was provided and because it seemed safer.

I've narrowed my ups search down to an APC unit, probably 1000va. The question is, are APC good value, or can I buy/ build one for much cheaper?

No idea. I paid R1.5k for my 2000VA RCT UPS.

APC = Excellent value for money. Solid build quality and the best after sales support. Best UPS products in the business for ICT applications.

Sure - you can buy something vaguely similar for half the price....

...but is it still comparable after factoring in after-sale support
...and availability of spare parts
...and reliability

In short...its much like cars..."value" is difficult to define.

Good to hear! Just hope there's still some stock left in SA :)
Judging by casual discussions...the vast majority of SA is still utterly oblivious as to whats happening...so I think you can still get something for a good week or 3. Especially if its online / you have specialist contacts.

That ignorance will not last though...so if you want to make a move on this front...sooner is better than later.

Hi. I am also looking for a UPS just to power my ADSL modem (Netgear DGN2200). I found this UPS which is quite cheap, and it has all the essentials like Line-Interactive, USB connection and AVR. Anybody have info on this company/brand? This should run the modem for a few hours, correct?

Edit: I see Esquire also sell this brand.

I'm looking for a 0 noise while powers still on UPS, I work in a dead silent environment and have paid a premium on parts to have an utterly silent PC.

I see the APC recommended has a fan which is a problem.

Suggestions ?

I would die if I need to be in a completely silence environment.

Guys, if you want to backup DC-powered devices like routers, don't do it with UPS. It is very inefficient, particularly on the light loads. Use DC/DC converter and power it from the old car battery (which is no longer able to crank the engine), or drill a hole in UPS enclosure and take power from internal UPS battery.
You can get 90% efficient DC/DC converters, even though standard USB 5V/2A cigarette car chargers will do.
To supply 12VDC devices there is less variety devices, as it requires mixed step/up step/down design, but you can use two 12V batteries in series when is no other choice.
