I'm not. The question posed was about abandoning them.
Abandoning whom?
As to the second paragraph, you're looking at this with hindsight bias. As Dr. Fauci mentioned we just didn't know, we still don't have all the information we need hence models are changing almost daily.
Oh come on, this is not a question of hindsight. Coronavirus was a slow-rolling disaster that was visible from miles away. Trump just didn't want to listen to bad news. There's nothing more complicated than that. And also, he fired the unit that should have been able to handle the pandemic response in the early stages, and probably spent months obdurately ignoring anyone who tried to warn him what was coming.
He even ordered a travel ban on China fairly early on, indicating he did know that something was coming. But he was completely incapable of doing what was needed and making the sacrifices that would have actually halted its progress. Now they're on 11,000 deaths and nearly 400,000 cases - far higher than any other country, and that's still a low estimate of the reality.
