Trump Taps Civil Asset Forfeiture to Fund Border Wall

Civil asset forfeiture is intensely divisive, not only drawing consternation from Democrats on the left but also sowing divides between traditional law-and-order Republicans and small-government-minded Libertarians on the right. Under the practice, investigators can seize assets from anyone suspected of criminal activity – regardless whether they've been or ever will be charged with a crime.

PARTICIPANT: Mr. President, on asset forfeiture, we got a state senator in Texas who was talking about introducing legislation to require conviction before we can receive their forfeiture.

THE PRESIDENT: Can you believe that?

PARTICIPANT: And I told him that the cartel would build a monument to him in Mexico if he could get that legislation.

THE PRESIDENT: Who is the state senator? Want to give his name? We’ll destroy his career. (Laughter.) Okay, thank you.
Do you not consider seizure of assets without any conviction against normal civil liberties? Coz your Emperor sure seems to be for civil asset forfeiture.

Pence: Well, the category you spoke about Mr. President — the gun violence restraining orders as they’re called — California actually has a version of this, and I think you … in your meeting with governors earlier this week, individually and as a group we spoke about the state’s taking steps. But the focus is to literally give families and give local law enforcement additional tools if an individual is reported to be a potential danger to themselves or others. Allow due process so that no one’s rights are trampled, but [allow] the ability to go to court, obtain an order, and then collect not only the firearms, but any weapons in the possession …
Trump: We’re going to take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times by the time you go to court … it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida; he had a lot of fires [and] they saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying but take the guns first, go through due process second.

I guess conservatives are so busy screaming m'uh MSM that they don't realise what this man actually stands for.

Remind me again what spying on citizens that Trump has abolished? Has he disbanded the Patriot Act and all its derivatives?

Let me guess, you're going to wave this away with some more m'uh Obama, right?

Since we are looking at timelines, I found this comprehensive timeline very interesting.

Each event is linked with a source, so those who don't suffer from TDS are welcome to prove where it is wrong.

Some critical junctures in the timeline where Trump shot himself in the foot -

May 8, 2018: The National Security Council removes the top official responsible for pandemic response and disbands the global health security team.

September 2018: The Department of Health and Human Services diverts funding from the CDC to pay for housing detained immigrant children. The Trump administration fails to follow through with an Obama-era project designed to protect against medical supply shortages during pandemics.

July 2019: The Trump administration eliminates an American public health position designed to detect disease outbreaks in China.

October 2019: The Trump administration concludes a months-long simulation, code-named “Crimson Contagion,” designed to respond to a global influenza pandemic. The Department of Health and Human Services determines that the U.S. is underprepared, underfunded, and under-coordinated to fight an influenza-like pandemic.

Late November-December 2019: U.S. intelligence agencies warn of a “cataclysmic” and “out-of-control” disease in Wuhan, China. Those analyses said China’s leadership knew the epidemic was out of control even as it kept such crucial information from foreign governments.

January 2020: U.S. intelligence agencies provide a detailed explanation in the President’s Daily Brief, and issue classified reports about the virus; senior U.S. officials begin to form a task force.

In January the response was mostly from the CDC reacting with the best information they had.

January 18, 2020: Alex Azar tries to speak to President Trump about the outbreak for the first time. President Trump ignores the warning.

January 23, 2020: Singapore bans all inbound flights from Wuhan, China. The WHO releases a statement about the novel coronavirus that includes transmission rates, human-to-human transmission capability, and severity of the virus.

January 24, 2020: President Trump thanks Chinese President Xi for his transparency and effort in tackling the coronavirus.

Note this praise was after Trump had received several briefings from the CIA saying the exact opposite.

January 30, 2020: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, in a Fox News interview, says the virus will be good for the U.S. economy. Secretary Azar directly warns President Trump that the virus could morph into a pandemic, a warning the president discounts as alarmist.

Wilbur Ross is now on the committee for opening up the USA.

Early February 2020: White House officials call for more forceful response to the novel coronavirus, but Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin resists.

February is still largely dominated by HHS and CDC actions. Trump was still down playing it at his rallies. - February 19, 2020: Trump assures the public against worrying about the coronavirus.
Trump states, “I think it’s going to work out fine. I think when we get into April, in the warmer weather, that has a very negative effect on that and that type of a virus.”

February 24, 2020: President Trump gives false assurance that the stock market is “starting to look very good” and the coronavirus is “very much under control.” Stock markets decline sharply following news of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

February 25, 2020: A CDC director says that a severely disruptive outbreak is inevitable. On the same day: The President’s National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow is asked about Dr. Messonnier’s comments. He tells CNBC, “We have contained this. I won’t say airtight, but it’s pretty close to airtight.” “I don’t think it’s going to be an economic tragedy at all,”

February 26, 2020: President Trump falsely assures the public that the number of cases will go down.
“We’re going to be pretty soon at only five people,”

March 6, 2020: President Trump falsely claims that any American who wants a COVID-19 test can get a test.

The Orange Snollygoster isn't good at propaganda, but he's not left with much else.

One of the doctors cited in a White House video derided as “propaganda” by critics of President Donald Trump is defending himself ― and offering up a mea culpa for his coronavirus prediction.

Trump on Monday showed off a campaign-like video of media figures speaking about the COVID-19 threat, claiming they “minimized” the risk.

One clip featured CBS News contributor Dr. David Agus predicting on Feb. 8 that “coronavirus is not going to cause a major issue in the United States.”

But Agus, a professor at the University of Southern California’s medical school, replied on Twitter shortly afterward that he was speaking based on what he had been told about the nation’s capacity to test for the virus and ability to quarantine the infected:

Those abilities did not exist; coronavirus tests promised by Trump and others on his team never materialized, setting back the effort to track the infection by weeks or longer.

Trump’s video montage suggested that media figures were downplaying the risk while the president was taking action.
In reality, Trump was attending campaign rallies, playing golf and downplaying the risk himself in his public statements despite being warned by aides and experts about the urgent need for action.
The president declared on Jan. 22 that coronavirus was “totally under control,” on Feb. 10 predicted it’ll “go away in April” and on Feb. 26 said the number of cases “within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

But they'll never address this.

Was this an issue in 2016 for you? Or only now?

Can the resident Trump defenders explain this to me?

What did Trump actually mean when he said - "When somebody is president of the United States, the authority is total."

The tweet thread does a good analysis of how dangerous that statement is.

I am curious of the interpretation of how there is actually nothing wrong with what he said. Especially from any resident Libertarians or Classic Liberals.

It has always been an issue for me. When I saw that on John Oliver's show back in 2016, I was left flabbergasted. Could not believe the USA was all too happy to trounce on peoples property rights without due process.

The question was directed at Randhir.

And, a random thought just popped into my head. Since everyone here just hates Trump so much, just imagine a Biden presidency. Through all the protesting and constant whining, the Democrats cannot offer up anyone who will be able to challenge Trump. The Democrats need a world wide pandemic to bring down Trump's approval ratings.

This stuff cannot be made up.

States have given up on the federal government and are forming regional pacts. This in direct contradiction to Trump's declaration that he has the sole authority to order states to reopen:

These states have formed regional coalitions to fight coronavirus and reopen their economies
It's been a little over a month since states started enacting social distancing and stay-at-home orders.
State leaders are starting to determine whether their states are ready to reopen their economies and slowly lift restrictions.

Several states are forming regional coalitions as a way to work together and stimulate economies at the same time.
Here are some governors who have already decided to team up

Ah there's that famous whataboutism :) So nice of you to do konfab's job for him.

So to answer your question (since you didn't bother commenting on the subject, I'll take it as your tacit approval of Trump's treading), I've always had an issue with Obama's various glaring problems, including his drone wars, which is why I never wanted Clinton to succeed Obama, but rather someone more progressive.

That's the difference. MAGAts will never criticise Trump for anything.

Partly true. The Dems cannot offer up any decent candidates. If they had a JFK reincarnate they could wipe the floor with Trump, but they can't seem to find a candidate that has universal appeal, with the charisma to draw in a unified response.

However, where my opinion digresses from yours is they had to rely on Trump's narcissism and the incompetence that is driven by his narcissistic opinions that caused the bungled response to the Pandemic, that has resulted in the USA playing catch up.

If Trump had taken the HHS Secretary seriously, or listened to the CIA or the CDC and acted early with sound leadership, the Dems would not have a chance in hell of beating Trump.

After the impeachment fell through, Trump opened the door for the Dems. His naivety on many affairs kept it wide open for them.

Perhaps theses states should form some kind of central authority to manage their joint efforts to protect their citizens... like a government perhaps... that could, you might say, unite the states.

Gov Cuomo telling it to the Cheetos Zeus.

'We have a constitution, we don't have a king': Andrew Cuomo rejects Trump's claim of 'total authority' to lift shutdowns as he leads 'Coronavirus Council' of nine Democratic governors to coordinate reopening

And there is your first mistake, and why it's pointless to engage with you on any sort of good faith basis. You are angry at Orange Man, and you want to project your opinions onto me.

I totes believe you when you say that you are now paying attention to what the USA government is doing around asset forfeiture.

Edit:

Oh, and I see you have not made ONE SINGLE negative post about Obama. How unsurprising.

But, you have clearly stated that you think Conservatives are stupider than Liberals.

I would have to agree.

Having a balanced and good faith conversation with you is not possible because you are just like all the other progressives on Twitter.

 You mean like how you are projecting your opinions about Obama onto me? Good job trying to deflect the question konfab asked about Trump and civil liberties ;) and good job managing to again deflect any criticisms of Trump
