the line should have read:
I'm assuming since you on <b>usb</b> now , when you flip back over (to ethernet), it will all be better. alternatively, reflash the modem with the firmware again, and try again.
it seems ou misunderstood the post, after reset, once needs to connect succesfully with user/pass using usb cable, this then gets stored in the modem to be used for ethernet/pppoe (at least thats what I experienced, and proasm once mentioned the user/pass(es) being stored in the modem.

I just upgraded to new firmware, and the bootloader info tells me ||||||||||||||||||||

if only it still said 4.2.1.8, it would make me feel a little comforted, but this is just weird. In regards to that CD they sending users, is it possible they have a new release of the modem dialler software, ie hyperthread friendly?
