Verbatim Vs. Toshiba

Hi Everyone :p

My company needs to buy a new external hard drive for our daily back up's. We want a 500gb USB drive. The IT people quoted us R1,300 for a Toshiba and we scouted around and found a Verbatim for R950 at Makro.

Now the IT guy says that Verbatim is rubbish and has a bad reputation. We don't want to spend the unnecessary money, so trying to get a few outsider opinions.

Anyone have experience with either of these brands? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I don't think Verbatim is rubbish. The only thing that matters is the drive inside. Just check either way if you get a guarantee.

You can easily make yourself one too - just buy a drive and an enclosure.
 
must agree with foozball3000.
The eSATA is not a must, but it will greatly increase your transfer speeds.

My personal preference when it comes to HD brands (in order): Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung.

You could pick these up really cheaply off Take2 or Kalahari and then simply purchase an external housing for the HD (also available on both those sites).
 
btw... warranty on Seagate = 5 years, Western Digital = 3 years
 
Seagate reduced their warranty to 3 years after that last debacle.

I bought 2 x Seagate 1.5Tb - my warranty is 5 years per drive. Not sure if this is perhaps 3 years from the manufaturer and 2 years from the supplier (doubt it) - but I was told I have 5 years.... anyway, even 3 years is plenty.

BTW - I seem to think that the external Verbatim units have Western Digital drive inside anyway. I have a 250Gb 2.5" External Verbatim and the drive inside is WD....

Your desktop Seagate drives are 3 years. Your high-performance/ES2 Seagates are 5 years.

I have a Seagate that definitely only has a 3 year warranty. Externals and portables generally less due to risk factor.
 
I have a similar dilemma, except I am comparing WD to Toshiba. I don't know that Verbatim use WD drives this may be true but I wouldn't buy Verbatim anyway. As far as I am concerned they make media not memory.

I noticed the Seagate drive at IC the other day and it doesn't even state the size of cache. It least I know that the Toshiba and WD both have a model that has USB2, SATA and 8MB cache

I'd go for the Verbatim.
 
I have a Fujitsu, Transcend and Iomega 500GB 2.5 inch drives and all work well. The Transcend is nice because it contains a Seagate drive and has been drop tested - although the Toshiba also states that it has 'shock protection'. I'd get one of those in case
someone drops the drive - maybe it is more likely to survive.
 
Ive used two Seagate Freeagent 750GB external desktop drives for our companys Windows 2003 SBS backup & didnt have one problem with it. Been running for more than 9 months now.
 
i have a 400gb 2"5 verbatim. It has a samsung inside. Verbatim dont make hard drives.
