From what I've heard (and I have no idea whether or not this is true, so don't quote me on this), the two parts have to share the same bitrate and resolution to be joined. Something to keep in mind

I tried both of those, but the HJ-Joiner did nothing except create another file of double the size but with only the video from the first move file... VirtualDub doesn't seem to support XviD encoded videos...

Other ideas?

it should what error is it giving you if the audio is VBR use nandub instead

Impossible. I use it for multiple XviD files.
