Virgin 3G on Vodacom!??

Diabolus, do a speed test, I just bought another VM sim to put in my HSDPA card in my laptop. I am very curious to see if I can get HSDPA speeds...

Just an update on the free Vodafone Live, i browsed a few pages today and it seems to be free during peak times as well?

Will check later, now i only get 3G/EDGE speeds, guess peak time testing doesn't help ;).
Anyway using this site : http://www.speedtest.net/index.php

I get
11/27/2006 9:47 PM GMT Download:211 kbits/s Upload:143 kbits/s
Latency:325 ms

I can confirm I'm getting 3g/hsdpa via virgin also...

well... the virgin mobile FYI guide does state that if theres 3g coverage virgin will use it since 3G is already enabled

Virgin is doing a lot of strange things recently. Do you get charged anything when using 3G?

Ok tested this morning, definitely got some form of HSDPA

No idea how much this is costing me, too afraid to look. I was struggling to use up my Virgin Credit before [too slow and i loaded up like R300 going at 50c p/MB]

Damn. I changed to Vodacom manually, but I get no 3G reception in my area. If I'm lucky I sometimes get about a 60% strength signal from MTN, but if I have the VM sim in the phone it just blocks it.

Why, oh why is getting broadband in this country such a PITA?

Diabolus, I suppose you have a 128k sim? When I put my 64k sim into my datacard it logs in to 3G but as soon as try to do anything it says "insert sim"
I will try and get a 128k sim today and see what happens.

No.

If you can force your phone to use 3G only, that may help

Yes i do. Also had a 64k sim long ago, had the same "insert sim" error. Things work fine with the 128k sim.

I can, but like I said - there is zero reception from Vodacom 3G in my neighbourhood. I suppose it won't hurt to try.
What does your phone say about the cell it is connecting to? Apparently if it says "Vodacom 3g" then you should get it.

It just says Vodacom at the top and gives a null reading on the reception indicators.

Before I bought the VM sim my MTN sim would give me a 3G connection with about 3, sometimes 4 bars in the reception indicator.

Yip VM on VC work for 3G. I'm getting roughly 322kbps average transfer rate.:D

I wonder if VM even knows about this. I mean, free 3G? If VM ever sends a representative to this forum, could everyone do all of us a collective favour and just get rid of all their posts in this forum which hint at free connections or 3G on Virgin? :D

Don't think VM knows much about their network. For once its working to our advantage though. :D

impossible your sim is not provisioned on vodacoms network , from vm you are seing 3g as the node b sends this informtion to all phones....

Well, I'm currently using my VM sim in a VC data card and I have locked it to VC 3G tower. Average transfer rate 349kbps.:D

At my house, the reception on my mobile always says "Vodacom Virgin". But when i venture a few kms down the road it resorts to just "virgin'.

Now i currently use gprs at home on virgin. I'm getting a 3g/hsdpa phone very soon. I'm heavily reliant on my mobile for data.

Does having this dual V&V reception offer any benefits?

Vodacom Virgin just means you're roaming on Vodacom whereas just Virgin means you're on Cell C. No benefit either way really, although some ppl say they get better speeds on the Cell C network, for GPRS anyway.
