Vodacom CEO explains BlackBerry problems and plans

Jannie, you may want to share the abusers' details with RiSA. Chances are very good that these abusers will be nailed for piracy.

Nice post jannie...except that irrespective of whether anyone is abusing the system in any way, form or function you are not able to do anything to anyone regarding their usage due to the contractual agreement and the vapid t&c's implemented.

The best thing you guys should be doing now is to shut up and hope this blows over.

FUP off !

Yes, if you cut through all the noise, it really comes down to what a fair number is? 100MB was just too low, 300GB clearly too high, so what's a good number?

My (personal) view was look at what the typical user is doing and multiply that with a factor of 3 to 5 to be safe. Thus my feelings around 500MB with decent throttling after that. It would give enough of a head-room for even the peeps here that started reporting their usage.

Also, most operators are selling 500MB of data at around R150/month, so 500MB for R59 with no capping is a very good deal.

But that's my view, not formal policy at this point in time.

Afternoon Jannie,

Is it just coincidence now that this 500MB figure you have was the biggest option on the poll created by Jess yesterday?

I still think that if 98% of your clients are not exceeding this 100MB "cap" figure you are talking about then there is no need to throttle anyone once you deal with the abusers directly. Simple fact is this:

1. If a person uses it as intended and runs up a usage of 2GB on average this isn't abuse as per the terms of the agreement.
2. If a person uses 10MB's but using it to download torrents or to stream content they should be removed as abusers. (This has got nothing to do with who uses how much. The abusers should not be allowed to do anything not part of the BIS agreement)

So if you really care about your clients like you claim, all you have to do is deal with the abusers no matter what amount of data they use. And let the legitimate users carry on using it unhindered no matter what amount of data they use.

This is the simple and clear solution. How you make that happen is up to you and RIM but anything else would still feel like users using it legitimately being labeled as abusers even though they are doing nothing wrong.

Please just go away! I am sick and tired of your constant babble.

Guess I should. I'm battling to get to your level of intelligent and informative posts and clearly cannot match your stratospheric powers of logic and debate:

Paddy is an imbacile.
Repetative article! :(
Oh and F$%# You VODASCUM (just my personal opinion)! :D

totally not necessary. dude why you got such a beef with this oke?

I don't have beef with jannievanzyl at all.
He is an official company rep for Vodacom and in reply where I advised VC to rather shut up and move on instead of adding more fuel to the fire he told me to shut up.

I'm really not happy with the direction Vodacom is heading in. I just ported to CellC.

+1

who knows, regardless you dont throw around personal insults coz things arent going your way.

speaks to one's maturity level.

You're being obtuse.
My reply was as a consumer being told by an official company rep to shut up.

Firstly, thanks for posting good points/questions and not attacking me like you've been doing the last few days.

Secondly, I agree with your points. Legit users are legit users and abusers are abusers. Or, at least, it should be that simple.

Once we can see inside the data streams we can do the stuff you suggest. As I've mentioned before, we're not there yet but are working on it. The volume thing was always supposed to be interim.

Added: Oh, BTW - I never had anything to do with the poll. I did ask for feedback but never suggested any numbers for it. I do suspect if there was a 300GB+ button, it would've received the most votes. ;)

throttle after say after 10 gigs is used

Assuming that is true if the other providers are smart about it and throttle at a reasonable limit - say for example 5gb - the impact should be negligible. At 4mb per day I was going to be treated as an abuser and that's enough for me to switch. Vodacom handled it badly and if they suffer the consequences then though luck on them.

From my (bad) calculations, if they got a 1gbps pipe, that in theory can get about 8640TB of data through a day, with the massive amounts of data that the abusers are pushing. 10 gigs is WAAAAY too high. Did my own tests, with the Network Traffic Control App. I intentionally surfed heavy since yesterday afternoon, got images and view ful mails on BB (3 accounts linked) chatted a lot on Nimbuz (Gtalk, MSN, FB) and posted, uploaded and surfed the FB program and I did about 10mb in about 8-9 hours...so, a more accurate throttle limit would be 350-500mb depending, cause I'm sure there are kids out there that have all day to surf the Twilight fan sites.

That and 5-10 GB of data for R60 a month, on a multi-billion rand cell network. If you were CEO, would you allow that for your company?

good post, very informative even though you had to repeat yourself on a lot of the issues. anyone with half a technical brain wouldnt have got their panty in a bunch about this... But like I've said before, mense like to flap!!!

Yeah, some people have had some serious pink panty melt downs here. Must be frustrating to find out that you can't pirate cr@p for next to nothing anymore. BTW, MTN's throttle policy is set at 150mb, FYI...Cell C has one as well, even if they say they don't ;)

The point I saw is that Vodacom were trying to sort out the crappy connection quality we have been having for the last god knows how long and the typical S.A. mentallity is to S*** their pants and be negative.

I was just frustrated Jannie, nothing against you personally. But It feels like you guys are hell bent on pushing your changes down our throats knowing full well we're not stupid.

If I did offend you are you felt attacked in anyway I apologize.

look dude. I got no beef with you, but you clearly have a chip on your shoulder coz your source for downloading is about to dry up.

to be honest, I was the same when the whole MWEB drama started. Then I realised I was being a cheap ASS, manned up and paid what I needed to pay to get the connection that I wanted... not the connection that I felt I deserved.

Instead of digging deep into your brain, producing countless posts of drivel, dig deep into your wallet and pay the money if you wanna download stuff.

if you NOT one of the abusers, then ignore the above.... Doesnt explain why you got such a chip then???
