Vodacom CEO's last day

Good luck to Mr Knott-Craig on his future and congratulations on growing Vodacom into an international cellular powerhouse.

It is not an easy time for Mr Uys to take over as new CEO of Vodacom. With the cellular saturation point in South Africa getting closer and with voice revenues under pressure the cellular providers are forced to either look at new territories to grow traditional mobile telecoms services, or create additional revenue streams. Both of these are challenging…will be interesting to see where VC goes next…

So whats the forecast for the next 3 years?

He may accept a board position or two, but his main ambition is to write more books and indulge in photography. His new book of bird photographs made its debut this week.

I bet he's not using the camera on his iPhone :D Probably got a couple of Canon 1Ds Mk III's and some L glass lying around...

I don't get this Hansie-type reverence for a man who created a business that has set about raping the SA public and profiteering at the expense of the poor. Yes, I know business-is-business, but social responsibility in a third world country is also critical. IMHO Vodacom is a company with the ethics of the gutter.

Very well put, my thoughts exactly. The blame though needs to be spread to the other players as well though. MTN and Vodacom created the policy of raping the public and Cell C was forced to follow, thanks to the collusion in fixing the interconnect fees so high just as Cell C's license was granted.

Lol Alan will have a fit if he read or cared for your comments!
As for profiteering from the poor, all businesses unfortunately do this.

BUT I think Vodacom will stand out more in the social responsibility area.
They do much more than most of the big companies in SA, have a look at the site, they have all their foundations listed, its quite a bit.
They also managed to bring communication to the poor since 1994 and have done so quite successfully, they the first company worldwide to come up with Prepaid, but even though its more expensive, the outcome is successful!

Regarding ethics, Voda still comes out infront of many other companies.
Funny you should use the word ethics....

I have no problem with "profiting", but I do with "profiteering".

No doubt. And why? Is that some veiled insult?

A pathetic pittance compared to the billions they have made. If they were not so astronomically greedy, and permitted by an incompetent Ministry to be so, how much more good could they have done? You are fooled by their marketing I would say.

Equivalent to Telkom, except with a semi-competent marketing department. Everyone actually enjoys bending over for the monthend insertion.

I suggest you guys stick to two tin cans and a string;).
