Vodacom CEO's last day

I don't get this Hansie-type reverence for a man who created a business that has set about raping the SA public and profiteering at the expense of the poor. Yes, I know business-is-business, but social responsibility in a third world country is also critical. IMHO Vodacom is a company with the ethics of the gutter.
You are 10000000% correct but you got to hand it to him ;)

I have no problem with "profiting", but I do with "profiteering".

No doubt. And why? Is that some veiled insult?

Firefox spellcheck...
Not really, from what I understand the company does tend to keep ethics and doing the right thing high on the agenda.

A pathetic pittance compared to the billions they have made. If they were not so astronomically greedy, and permitted by an incompetent Ministry to be so, how much more good could they have done? You are fooled by their marketing I would say.

Well the billions they make affords them to give billions away right? They were never a charity organisation. Compare them to De Beers, which company does more for the people in the country and which is more ethical?

And how is that implied? Actually I wouldn't mind an iPhone, but not at 3-4x the USA price or whatever whopping price Voda are charging for the privilege.
Stupid post, Vodas profit on the iPhones is the same as the rest of the worlds. Stevy is the crook not the SPs

Where is your proof. We all know that Apple's kark is 5x the price in SA, this applies to iPods and their other stuff too.

I think certain posters here should declare their allegiances.

All the Vodacom employees put one foot forward.

If someone disagrees with a certain point of view they are automagically Vodacom employees?

Yes Vodacom is making billions in profit, but main reason for the stagnation in SA telecomms can be placed squarely at the door step of government for protecting Telkom and failing to get their arse in gear.

As JK8 mentioned, Vodacom supports far more organisations than any of the other rich companies in SA.

If you don't like Vodacom and/or their service don't use them. B!tching about it certainly not going to get you any browny points.

So Vodacom is now responsible for the iPod pricing in SA as well?

Or do you, for once ,agree with me; in this case that Apple pricing in SA is set by Apple?

Do you guys understand how you get the iPhone in America

YOU yes you PAY in $299 plus you HAVE to sign up a 2 YEAR contract to get the phone. And yes it says so in the fine print on apples site dudes:eek:

$299 X 8 = 2399 +- you paying in which is equivalent to the pay in price on a contract here ..............

Not out for brownie points, mate. Just trying to show that the hallowed Vodalot are not all vetkoek and oros, though you seem to think so. Score another point for their marketing. The others are sadly worse.

I am also in the club of folks who think that holding telecoms business leaders in high regard is fickle when you pause and think of the kind of deals that had to be made in the absolutely atrocious legislative environment to get their companies where they are. This doesn't go for all of the guys, but when your company has the level of ownership from Telkom that Vodacom has then I am hesitant to say bravo.

From a management point of view he was brilliant and credit must be given, but from a consumer point of view it isn't our business to hold these folks in high regard. They are not our allies. :)

Goodbye Vodacom, c u l8r

Ended my contract with them yesterday. Converted my contract sim to prepaid so that I can keep the number though. Will come in handy with those off-peak Yebo4Less discounts or when MTN pisses me off in 2 years time[1]. Only reason I didn't convert the contract to prepaid sooner was because the Upgrade Dept told me if I did so, I could not take out a contract on that sim card until 6 months after conversion. How is that for alienating your customers and holding their cell numbers to ransom?

I was waiting to see what the iPhone pricing was like, and now that it has been revealed (and the waste of time manner in which it was revealed) I have no reason to stay with them. NDA or not, that pre-registration page really ticked me off.

[1] MTN, Vodacom, they all the same. Seem to make no effort to retain customers or reward loyalty. So I'll choose MTN this time round, as they seem to offer better contract deals than Vodacom at the moment.

The reason behind that is the customer has very few choices because the market is not open. But whose fault is that? Like I mentioned previously, the Government is the original cause of our problem. And yes the telecomms companies are using the "closed-market" to mint money, but certainly you have to give Vodacom some credit for giving something back to charity organisations.

With regards to the comments regarding Alan Knott Craig - you have to give credit where credit is due. He was undoubtedly the mastermind behind Vodacom's success. Everyone can be a critic, but if you were placed in his position, what would have done differently taking into consideration the constraints in the market by having to use Telkom exclusively for certain services?

I don't.

Please provide detailed proof.

The iPOD (which Vodacom doesn't sell) pricing already proved a point;).

I never said I didn't agree. All I am saying is that when commenting on something you have an interest in, it is more honest to declare that interest.

I'm waiting for a denial, any denial. Will I get it? ;)

Fair enough. It's Robin Hood (Alan KC) and his merry men stealing from everyone to give to the poor. If they didn't do it the next network would have. Stolen from everyone that is, not necessarily the 'giving to the poor' bit ;)
