Vodacom Edge on HTC Touch

Hi Guys,

I have a HTC Touch, but no matter where i am in teh country, i never pick up EGDE. A friend of mine who has teh same phone picks up EDGE and connects to teh internet on his phone via edge.

I dont understand, can anyone assist here? My simcard is a few years old, do only newer sim cards support edge? or and i totally off track.
