Vodacom explains LTE launch

VC just wanted to be first! Bragging rights. If you take the current coverage into account, very small and spotty, it's clear this "launch" is totally premature and is again a marketing ploy rather than a proper commercial launch.

Again just MHO!

^^ Which everyone that knows anything about the cellular networks shares. It all comes down to marketing and bragging rights. Sure they were always going to launch LTE at some point. But the highly limited and spotty coverage is highly indicative of a premature launch.

+1

If it hadn't been for MTN being so vocal about their ambitions, I doubt Vodacom would have been so eager to launch now. So imo its hugest kudos to MTN on this one.

Yeah, LTE network to watch will be the MTN network!

VC doesnt even have UE's available that support LTE, shows that this was a rushed, reactive decision

Vodacom is doing more damage now than they ever have with this Jasoob at the helm. Bragging, yes, ready, no... Crap service, horrid company... No thanks, im following the knot craig atleast the service was good when he was at the helm at vodacom

So, you're telling me he came back from Spain to launch LTE? I call BS.

EDIT: Okay, I misread - he came back from Spain, and then decided to launch LTE. So, if it wasn't for him LTE would not be on Vodacom's to-do list?

It's shocking to see the amount of green (GPRS/GSM only) on that coverage map of JHB.

I also thought Joburg was 100% 3G,It shows vodacom's LTE launch was premature

Those were exactly my sentiments, especially after the 8ta presentation was done at the Mybroadband conference last week. 8ta completely showed up Vodacom without even seeingly breaking a sweat. I am aware that 8ta has got better spectrum vs Vodacom's refarmed offering but any logical person could see that Vodacom definitely rushed this.

Short term gains but definitley no long term strategy here...

VC's FDD spectrum should out perform 8ta's TDD spectrum.... Also VC's 1800 should give better coverage vs 8ta's 2300MHz

I think it was a smart move.

Nobody remembers who was second or third.

MTN? Wah Hah hah. They can't even make what they already have work properly -and they want to do LTE? Gee, I didn't know you could do LTE on "Edge".

Well, you should try MTN's. It's ten times worse. Most of the East Rand only gets Edge.

“The reason I came back form Spain and decided to launch [LTE] is because I felt we were falling behind,”

This statement does not pay good homage to Mr Uys.
