Vodacom iPhone Tethering and Visual Voicemail

I used the settings on Marc Forrests' site since last year. I'm on OS 3.1....Always worked fine for me!

i've tried his settings a number of times and no joy.

im kinda stumped coz i'm dof with these things. I own a software dev company and am extremely technically competent.

but its prolly a good thing if it doesnt work. R2/mb? no thanks

I read somewhere that you can get your tethering option back if you do this:

Settings->general->Reset->Network Settings

Switch phone off and back on.

This should reset your apn to iphone.vodacom.za so make sure this apn is enabled in the services section of the vodacom4me (enabling this apn sometimes takes a little while). Changing your apn to "internet" may disable tethering.

Would someone like to try to see if that works as I have the tethering option myself.

Was just about to say that... Did that a while back (but the reset all) and the option came back.

Thethering not working on iPhone 3GS with 3.1.2.

I used the tethering when I got my Iphone with version 3.0 software after I did the APN setting changes. When I updated the software later, my thethering option under netwrok seetings dissapeared. can anyone help with getting it back on version 3.1.2 or 3.1.3?

The person who wrote this article is an idiot. You make fun of yourself for being out of the VVM loop, but the irony is you fail to realise just how out of the loop you really are. Official tethering with Vodacom's been out for ages... and with regards to paying for the VVM service, you an idiot again for supporting VC on something that should be free.. just like everywhere else in the world. The fact that it's R10 is irrelevant, it's a matter of principle man!

We get shafted by these companies day in and day out; and tossers like you don't help the situation.

Dammit, it's poor journalists like you that give tech journalism in South Africa such a bad name.

Agreed VertigoZA

It is NOT about the R10 a month. Its about Vodacom charging ridiculous prices already on for the iPhone contracts, and now they expect an additional R10? VVM has been a key feature of the iPhone platform since launch, and every other network who supports it gives it away with iPhone contracts.

I understand its data costs etc, but it does not take away from the fact that it should be free. It almost as stupid as the charge for CLIP in SA. Vodacom still promotes their contracts without including line identity.

This is the grade A "shafting" we as SA always get exposed to.

I am not even going to mention the lack of knowledge by the writer - how could you not know about tethering? Or am I misreading the article here?

I still maintain that Vodacom is clearly not capable of supporting a smartphone like the iPhone properly.

That did not work for me, never ever seen the option available in the 18 months I have had mine

I really don't see the fuss. Both my 3G iPhones have the tethering option, and is a breeze to setup. A few caveats - you must be using Vodacom on your iPhone for this to work - I tried it with my MTN card and I battled to get the tethering option. Second, your APN must be set to internet, third download the latest iPhone software - there was a new one out a few weeks ago.

no can do... running geohot's blackrain...

Well, if you have jailbroken your iPhone, then I guess you are stuffed....until geohot come's out with a fix. I did a jailbreak on my first iPhone that I bought in the USA and brought back here, before they were available in S.A. What a pain - every time there is a software update, you have to wait and do a new jailbreak so you can take advantage of the new software. Now.....I just pay the (big) bucks and rather buy the iPhone cash for a S.A version - it is completely open, can run with any network, and can do any and all software updates.

i bought my phone cash as well.. SA phones arent network locked. The reason I ran JB is to get access to apps that arent in istore..

Tethering has been working since the 3.1.1 upgrade as the Vodacom settings for MMS & Tethering are built into the firmware.
This means if you are on MTN or CellC, you more than likely will not have access to tethering or MMS, as each time you sync, the settings are "overwritten" with the Vodacom settings. It won't work any other ways, by applying hacks etc, won't get you tethering.

To allow internet tethering to work, you need to have access to the iphone.vodacom.za APN, which needs to be activated by Vodacom, either through the call centre or Vodacom4me website.
As Gambit mentioned earlier to reset your settings can can do the following: Settings->general->Reset->Network Settings

With regards to VVM, this also relies on the iPhone APN, so you need to have that activated when turning VVM on. Again, this will obviously only work on Vodacom. With regards to Price, I agree R10 isn't too much, but agree it should be built into the Vodacom iPhone package.

Hi,

I'm having a problem getting VVM activated on my Vodacom Contract iPhone 3G. I had it activated by Vodacom, but it still does not work on my phone. The Voicemail button dails 121 when tapped.
I Resetted all setting on the phone and even restored it to factory settings, but still the Voicemail button dails 121.
How do I get my VVM working?

wtf? i was forced to upgrade to 3.1.3

still no tethering option
