Vodacom iPhone Tethering and Visual Voicemail

I activated visual voice mail the other day and I'm loving it. Even though I wish it was free, it is worth R10 pm. With regards to tethering I was under the impression that this is activated for vodacom iphones because I have had the option in my settings since the 3.1.2 software update and I don't remember having to hacktivate it (but could be wrong as it was a long time ago). I have used tethering a lot and also works great. I was wondering if someone could tell me if this really is not available to us because I told my friends that they must use it but when I checked they don't have the option on their iphones? I thought maybe because they changed their apn to "internet" it wasn't available but now this article says it is not available.

yup.. for some reason i dont have tethering on my iphone... it was there in 3.0, but dissappeared in 3.1

and im JB'd so not gonna upgrade to 3.1.3 anytime soon...

I would like to see how accurate visual voicemail is with SA accents and languages. ;)

It is barely working with the standard American accent - if there is no background noise.

i got thethering on my prepaid (bought unlocked overseas) iphone 3GS, no problem. just had to call Vodacom to set it up initially, worked ever since (7 months) so i'm not sure what dear Ben is on about... maybe he should like 'try'?

Has Ben been living in a cave? Tethering has been working since OS 3.0 came out (Check Settings | Network | Internet Tethering). Voicemail to SMS is nothing new from Vodacom. The Visual Voicemail however is way more than that.

I cannot comment on the visual voice mail, but this article is wildly inaccurate w.rt. tethering - it's been supported since OS3.0 and is working on Vodacom. In fact, calling *111# and selecting the iphone dept will get you someone who will help you set it up. I've been tethering on my 3GS for the last 5 months.

That said, i do occasionally find that it resets to it's OFF state, most frequently when i answer a voice call during tethered operation, but also sometimes when i attempt to use data services outside a coverage area.

Also, i've found that you have to be in a 3G/HSDPA coverage area while activating it, otherwise you get the message "Tethering not supported on your network, contact Vodacom.".

Hmmm , VVM sounds interesting. I am using GConnect for my 3G data so don't have the normal APN in the settings, which means I have to auth via a captive portal web page using MobileSafari before using the net (which I know and am willing to do for my needs) .... so I wonder if the VVM messages will work having that set. I'll have to give it a go when time allows.

No problems with tethering at all here. Works fine on 3.1.3 via bluetooth and cable. No scripts required.

Tethering and Visual Voicemail

I have been using tethering( from my macbook ) and visual voicemail, and both work very well, so not sure what this article is about.

If you notice tethering has dissapeared in 3.1 do a factory restore, then restore from backup, then tethering should be enabled again.

Tethering has always worked perfectly, besides the slow 3G speeds in SA. Bring on 4G, but I guess in SA we will only get that in 2040.

I have 3 iPhones - an original 2G that I got in the USA, and a 3G and a recently bought 3GS. I have updated the software on both 3G models, and my internet tethering works a treat on them. It works incredibly well, is seamless, and is easy-peasy to setup. Whats more, I can receive calls and make calls while 'tethered' with no interruption to my internet

Cheers Benny

Don't have internet tethering on my phone, 3.1.3. Could it be because I am on a non-iPhone contract? My APN is also just internet, not the iphone.vodacom.co.za one.

Anyways, I disabled my voicemail, people can phone back.

wow it looks like someone does not know how to use their iphone. shame. its quite sad.
