Vodacom makes HSUPA free

Hmmm... speed.vodacom.co.za tells me download is 2185 kbps, and upload 978 kbps, but speedtest.net tells me download is 1857 kbps and upload is 435 kbps...

Sounds like vodacom is trying to pull a fast one.

Thats a fail

Yes, only 2.5% of users pay the extra 50 bucks.

So now they make the HSUPA free - now there's even LESS of a motivation to pay the R50 as some users might have only paid to get the HDUPA benifits (Uploads a lot to work/etc)

Now this number should fall even more in the coming months - Why don't they just bladdy make it free - They have the Network Available but hold it back because they want a couple of R50 notes?

FAIL.

Agreed. Which one is the catchiest? {with the emphasis on catch )

To Vodacom Representitive

Thank you for the information. If I upgrade to the 1800/1400 profile, will I still be able to use both 1.8, 3.6 and 7.2 devices? I have a 1.8 device on my desktop and a 7.2 device on my laptop, I switch sim cards now and again.

To clarify. Everyone is automatically on the 1800/1400 profile, including yourself. No need to 'upgrade' to anything and this will work on any of your modems that support the speed. If your modem only supports a lower speed (like the E220 only support 384 in the uplink), you'll get whatever is the lower speed of the modem or the profile (1800/1400 in this case.)

I see a lot of posts here saying people want "HSDPA for free". Obviously, if you have a HSDPA modem you're already getting HSDPA-1.8. And now also HSUPA-1.4.

If you want to try the 3600/1400 profile, you need to activate it as a VAS service @ R49.

Won't you explain which part you don't understand and I'll see if I can clarify it for you.

Previously you had to pay a VAS fee to get UPA and DPA-3.6. Now you get the UPA portion without having to pay for it.

Where are you battling? Maybe the difference between UPA and DPA? Have a look in the vodacom sub-forum. I wrote a long explanation there.

I understand that, and I have enabled the service on my account. However, I'm still not getting anywhere near those speeds. I won't believe speed.vodacom.co.za because that's an internal service, not an external one like speedtest.net. I also know that 3.6 is not a guaranteed speed, but surely I should be getting more than 1.8Mbps?

v3g, seriously now - can't you suggest to the guys up top that charging R49 for 3.6 is pointless if only 2.5% subscribe to it.

I don't see anything wrong with it - might lose a few R50's here and there, but could gain a lot of new users, guys leaving mtn for vodacom, and an Increase in bundle purchases ALL ROUND.

C'mon - Do it for us - you gonna look good in front of the bosses after bringing in tons more cash!

just tell them to TRIAL it atleast.

The Vodacom speed test uses exactly the same engine most of the speedtest.net servers use. The one by Ookla.

It's actually better to test the "Vodacom" portion of the network as it removes any 'non-Vodacom' links from the tests. For example, for a few months the external speedtest.net server in Cpt gave very low results and (I believe) is now gone.

These speedtest.net servers are hosted by anyone and when you use them to test speed you also test whatever link they have into the internet. And the power of their server. So you can't get a clear picture of the network portion of the test.

So always do a speed.vodacom.co.za test first and then the others. This will give you an indication of the VC-portion (speed.vodacom.co.za), the local peering links (JHB speedtest.net, if you're in JHB) and the international links (NY speedtest.net)

Another interesting thing we're beginning to see with speed tests is that they can't test high speed links accurately using only one thread. We saw this with speed.vodacom.co.za (written by Ookla remember) and had to get them to change it to run multiple download threads before the link was saturated. We've got no way to check if the other speedtest.net servers out there are running the latest version.

One way you can check this is to run a network monitor such as DU Meter and then run the speed test together with a few other downloads. You'll probably find that the total wire-speed is higher than any one application can generate. Unless the app can cerate multiple download threads.

rpm also picked this up when he tested 7.2. Only with 4 or 5 concurrent FTP's did the wirespeed approach 7.2Mb/s. Think he got just over 6Mb/s.

As to why you're not getting 3.6, the above might explain some of it, but most likely you're in an area where there is no extra backhaul links available to give the higher speed. This is the core reason why we're downplaying 3.6 and have not activated 7.2.

If we can get the thousands (and thousands) of backhaul links on back-order, it would be a completely different picture for us all.

But many areas do have enough backhaul. Thus my advise to test 3.6 in your area for one month first.

Just to confirm, which modem and dash do you use?

*waves at v3g like a loonatic* :D

Trail 3.6? We did, think it was free for 3 months so everyone could test it. But we don't have a neat way to enble it for free for 3 months per new modem. So it was a blanket free for everyone setup.

I don't have a problem with VAS type structures, makes sense to pay more for something extra.

But I agree that this specific VAS structure should be re-looked at. And there's a lot of 're-looking' taking place. ;)

Sounds good. :o

unless nobody is paying - then it would be better to include it for free, and atleast get SOMETHING out of the 3.6 Network (Faster bundle depletion, more satisfied customers, Better speeds & increase of Vodacom Users)

I really hope this gets looked at - this system is seriously warped.

I just wish that Vodacom would learn to write their stuff in a "Unambiguous" manner with the proviso that "The Reasonable Person Test" will be applied and understood if all was written in an "Ambiguos" manner to avoid wrong interperations by the "Reasonable Person" - paterfamilias.

At this stage I have made an official complaint with the ASA to Rule on this matter.

Just as a note, if you want to do a speed test within South Africa that has very few bandwidth contraints from either DSL or Vodacom 3G or any other mechanism, TENET is busy testing a speed test service at http://gambit.tenet.ac.za. This was put in place primarily for our clients to verify link speeds etc, but its not restricted for internal use.

I have to stress, this is still very much a test service though I'd be interested in hearing results achieved.

Some notes about this, you will need to be on a connection that is not firewalled and I'd also be interested to hear how well this works behind NAT (as I haven't had a chance to test it in that regard yet)

Any comments would be well recieved

Let me rephrase that; One should pay for a VAS service, if the service warrants it.
