Looks like the network in general is responding rather slow. I've come across a few people where they're on prepaid and it takes at least three minutes to get a response from the network to convert or even load airtime for a data bundle. The internal systems seem to be going slow as well as all the consultants on the helpdesks comment "Hold on, my system is going slow" when ever i've called through for help with something.

I'm not 100% sure what's caused it, though i would assume the storms have done some damage as i'm hearing rumors that at least one tower in our area alone has been taken out.

Anyone else having problems with the sms and data side of the network? Even the *111# service?

Getting a 20-25% packet loss here, mostly in the evenings, which makes certain internet based activities frustrating at best.

Network seems to be more stable now.
I think you right their network could be congested.

I was trying to connect to mXIT, 2go, Mig, and other chat services experienced the same problem.. Connecting, even using WAP to connect to website did not work either.

*whack* :D

You can never have too many customers.

You can, however, suffer from a serious backhaul supply issues.

Is the fibre roll-out not helping quickly enough? How is the fibre roll-out going btw? Laying in bloem yet? :D

Remember, there are thousands of towers and the rings only go through the major metro areas.

Not sure anything gets layed in Bloem. ;)

What do you have against puny lil bloem? :p

How does vodacom connect smaller cities to the major fibre networks in the metros? Also with fibre or via rf? Do those links cause bottlenecks?

Copper or Microwave. They could cause bottle necks but often it's lack of backhaul to the tower itself.

Back to the issue at hand, slowness at night on 3G (prepaid customers).

Trying to use my cellphone for ANYTHING at night is fruitless, none of my apps that use an internet connection can get a working one.

When is the network going to be fixed/upgraded so that these problems disappear?

Connection problems on 2009/01/12 22:00-01:00. N1 City area, PPDB.
When attempting to connect got 619 error, or if it did connect, couldn't do DNS lookups or even ping DNS server.
Tried 'internet' and 'unrestricted' APNs, GPRS-only and 3G-only.
Again on 2009/01/14 21:00-22:00.

Same old K@K!!!

Why am I not surprised ???

Timeouts, Disconnects, No throughput

Well done Vodacom, your PPDB service sucks BIGTIME!!!!!!!!

And to think 2008 we had the exact same problems ... and still no improvement.

Well at least they are very good at this K@K.

:mad::mad::mad:

No wonder V3G dont even respond to this thread anymore ... cos what's the point... It's not like Vodacom is doing something about it .. well it doesnt look like they are ...

New years resolution for Vodacom 3G (and not you V3G): Resolve these freakin reliability issues.

And on that note, i'm out ...

PrePaid / Contract Latency difference?

WHOA! (reading between the lines here so I might be wrong)

Stop the train - Do I understand correctly that if I give up my 2Gig PrePaid bundle (which I buy at 10% discount) and get a 2Gig contract (losing out on the 10% discount) (and most probably have to pay R35 odd contract fee) that the latency will improve?
How much?:p
Why?

My best SA local ping is about 170ms and international 300ms.
This worsen to 500-1000ms sometimes.

Got a few Line Of Sight tests done with local ISP's resulted in (and I have seen this with my own eyes) international ping times of 60ms!

I am seriously thinking about giving up my 1.8Mg Vodacom ISP with at best 300ms ping times for a 256Kb LOS link with 60ms ping times.

I am earning my income with this connection and requesting data every 1000ms, the program doing the requests reports an error connection ever so often resulting in reloading all the data again. (OK very fast!)

Thus results in unnecessary data costs and unwanted down time.

Cost comparison is actually good: Initial equipment about R500 more but monthly expense would be down R100 for twice the amount of data use.
The only drawback would be that it is not mobile!

Come on - stop me changing to a radio link for access........
(maybe I will keep my prepaid SIM and 3G card for backup & when I want to move around - like working while fishing:cool:)

You are wrong. While the billing system is different, they are all served over the same towers and backhaul links.

There is no latency difference between PP or contract. Both use same towers, links, etc.

I do monitor this thread (even Saturday nights ;)) and escalate when I see what looks like a general problem.

Seems iv gotten the bug

I see that the past week around 7pm right up to the morning 2am iv been getting problems with slow or time-out errors on my phone's internet. Used all the apn's from internet, vlive to internetvpn and still. Ofcz the settings are correct and iv tired other networks which seems to work but its a real pain in the butt to swap sim cards after 7pm because data is half working

Durban : Mt Edgecombe
HSDPA,3G,GPRS all seem to have this problem

BTW, don't stop posting but rather add as much details as possible. Some of the regions actively monitor these threads (Western Cape and KZN especially) and they often pick up on the problems here before I can escalate them.

Remember though, it's not an official place to report problems (155 is that place) but it still is worthwhile to post here.

Thanx V3G,

I do know that you do your best to assist us and that you do monitor the forum. It' s all the frustration thats building up and then I end up posting something like that.

Anyway, I will log call on 155 next time .. then post something.
