Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Thanks V3g. Any idea when this could happen? Also another problem. I am using my Xbox 360 connected to my laptop connected to Vodacom HSDPA USB modem to play games. When I connect to Xbox Live In PE (through the xbox) where I live it works fine and every time.

I pack up and go to East London. Unpack all my crap. Connect everything the same and get MTU failed when trying to connect the the Live service. I then go back to PE and it all works perfectly again.

Could this be a Vodacom problem with different MTU sizes or something for PE and EL?

No, don't think so. I suspect the MTU message is probably masking the actual problem. Is this a repeatable siautation, i.e. does it happen all the time or was it a once of, the trip to EL?

Can you connect normally in EL, do normal browsing?

The problem we see with ppdb is that some users, at high peak times mostly, must retry a few times before they connect.

But you will connect and should then get the throughput you would have seen with a contract sim, i.e. the 'connect' problem does not affect your speed.

You could try and connect a few times without a bundle and see how well it works. Connecting with or with-out a ppdb will give you the same effect.

I know a lot of work was done over the last few days to address this problem.

What is the general feedback on connection retries on ppdb?

On my prepaid sim, which does not have a ppdb, I still can not connect after doing a simswop, and paying R59 for it, on Friday (the new sim was activated on Friday, and I called just to make sure that gprs is active on the sim). I can't connect using my phone's browser, and with my pc when I connect with the USB cable, gives a "PPP link control protocol" error. I've tried 50 times, literally.

My contract sim works ok in that it connects successfully 9/10 times. My prepaid sim also does not connect in my other 6680. The contract sim works in both 6680's.

Given the fact that I have now swopped the sim, it is obvious that the fault is not with my physical simcard, but somewhere on the network.

I guess the Vodashop won't swop my sim back and give me refund

EDIT: Update - problem resolved. I can connect again. Thanks to the 155 guys for rapid service.

// Jeez anyone else in the Cape Town CDB struggling - slow speeds and multiple refreshes to get a page to load ???!

Doing a speedtest with a E220 in Technopark gives 192 kbits/sec on the download and 222 kbits/sec on the upload. V3g, Shaun said they will be increasing the capacity on the Papegaaiberg and Nietvoorbij towers, but in Technopark I'm quite sure we are connecting to the Golf Course tower.

The dash doesn't seem to have any tower info, so I put my 6680 in the same place as the modem and Celltrack gives the tower ID as 22571 and signal strength -91 dBm.

Can you mail me and Shaun the details?

I will send the email tomorrow. Will probably run a few more tests tomorrow from work too.

Seems a lot better now. Got 766 kbits down, and 218 up.
Will check again later, but for now, no worries :)

3g/Gprs dead in pe and cape town

What is going on vodacom,

I get connected to 3g, but i cant ping or resolve any dns, nothing!
This has been like this since 11pm last night.. 10 hours

Now ive gone to internet cafe

Why i dont call their helpline, I cannot afford to turn off my normal cell number for a hour to swap sims and call the helpline and sit on hold or wait to be called back.

My relative in cape town on gprs has the same problem (near ottery)

I'm having the same issue, my connection dropped last night around 11, and I haven't been able to use my connection since. It successfully connects but there's no data throughput.

Any ideas what I can do? I'm currently needing to use my MTN sim at R2 a MB - which hurts.

I'm connecting with a prepaid sim if that helps resolve things.

Same problem in Sandton (JHB)!

I phoned 082155 from my desk phone ... their recorded message says "Please note we are currently experiencing throughput problems with GPRS and 3G".

Currently on hold ...

They answered ... the person I spoke to was aware of the "general problem with throughput" but still tried to get me to check my proxy settings, delete cookies and all that. Could not say how long the general problem would take to resolve or what its cause is.

Paging vodacom3g!

Just checked with my pre-paid in my phone i can access the vlive website, in my usb modem nothing, on my top-up evrything is fine
