Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

A little Fix that I found

Hello,

I previously encountered about the problem with most of the Mobile Internet Connection whether 3G or Edge. It's slow and the latency is so high that sometimes some sites doesn't even want to open.

After searching in the web for so long, finally I found the site that helped me fix it. The problem seems to be the MTU settings set in Windows is too high for Mobile Internet Connection.

Go to this site for the Registry Fix http://www.wiseworm.com/index.php/mobile-3g-slow-connection-fix/15/

Hopefully this helps everyone.

@vodacom3g: please can u update this thread with information on when ppdb is sorted out. I wanna buy a ppdb but the connections problems are stopping me.

The problem we see with ppdb is that some users, at high peak times mostly, must retry a few times before they connect.

But you will connect and should then get the throughput you would have seen with a contract sim, i.e. the 'connect' problem does not affect your speed.

You could try and connect a few times without a bundle and see how well it works. Connecting with or with-out a ppdb will give you the same effect.

I know a lot of work was done over the last few days to address this problem.

What is the general feedback on connection retries on ppdb?

Well for me, like you said, I retry to connect and usually on the second try, Im authenticated. Once connected the thoughput is "acceptable". Yesterday I had blinder with good throughput from the morning till the evening or maybe it could be contributed to the fact that all the Northern Gautengers and Kwazulu okes were all dik gesuip still. :)

Funny you should mention Pta/Kzn. Have you noticed most problems reported here are from those areas!!:D

Getting full EDGE down speed for the first time in nearly a month this evening... perhaps its the rain?... keeping my fingers crossed

Maybe it is the rain... was getting near full HSDPA speed... was averaging 1.4mbps (according to the VMC dash) the whole afternoon :D but then again it only went that high when i was d/l on Azureus and then down to bout 700kbps when doing normal browsing.

All of Monday I could connect first time, today its crap again!

Would it not be a better option to sell out the remaining parts of Vodacom completely to Vodafone so we can get this problem sorted out by a GSM operator who can run a network?

This problem is now running into over a month!

May be in the meantime Vodacom could allow Virgin Mobile access to the 3G network as VM are keeping me running here!!!

Take the Pre-Pay SIM out that has the data bundle on it and insert a normal Pre-Pay SIM in the E220 and bingo logs on first time!

Are Vodacom not competent enough to sort out logon problems? I keep hearing "its the way PPDB logon" well its IS the way PPDB logon - Its not working and it needs fixing, either a new procedure, spend some money if its hardware or get some help from the outside world!

Enough really is enough!

@JimM: thats what i've been saying all along. Data connects first time on my contract and normal prepaid number but takes ten tries on my ppdb. When i do eventually connect, i get errors and have to retry. Vodacom will take few months to sort this out as according to them there is no problem.

They would all be looking for jobs if they gave this service in Europe!

Whoever told you there is no problem with pre-paid connection attempts is smoking his socks. The guys are doing multiple different things to address the issues.

This thing of pre-paid with a bundle (giving connection problems) or without a bundle (not giving connection problems), can anyone else confirm or deny it?

I'd like to test it a bit further.

Ho hum ... back to 76kbps down speed ... wish they would pull some of those expensive ads and put the money into upgrading the network or buying overseas skills....

First 128K 2969 msecs: Download speed = 44147 Bytes per sec, Approx = 367K bits per sec
Second 128K 3281 msecs: Download speed = 39949 Bytes per sec, Approx = 332K bits per sec
Third 128K 2953 msecs: Download speed = 44386 Bytes per sec, Approx = 369K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 3329 msecs: Download speed = 39373 Bytes per sec, Approx = 328K bits per sec

PE 21:16

Lucky bastard, I am getting my usual 120 kbits/sec for the evening peak.

May still be a while. The network guru's did some testing around Stellenbosch. They found that the Papegaaiberg and Nietvoorbij towers are congested (surprise, surprise!) so it will hopefully get upgraded soon to more capacity.

High Latency

Hi, I am using the usb modem with mymeg500 contract. I use it to play xbox360 games. The latency is terrible. When using SG TCP optimizer for a latency test I get an average ping of 400-450ms. Is there a way to improve this?

Probably not much. The 3G radio component probably account for 250ms of this, the rest on the national and international links. When we move up to 3.6Mb/s you'll see some improvement.

Thanks V3g. Any idea when this could happen? Also another problem. I am using my Xbox 360 connected to my laptop connected to Vodacom HSDPA USB modem to play games. When I connect to Xbox Live In PE (through the xbox) where I live it works fine and every time.

I pack up and go to East London. Unpack all my crap. Connect everything the same and get MTU failed when trying to connect the the Live service. I then go back to PE and it all works perfectly again.

Could this be a Vodacom problem with different MTU sizes or something for PE and EL?

Definitely been better for me the last few days, get the odd 619 and dropped 3G signal so its not perfect but a lot better than it has been before, usable now. ;)
