10MB per test, 21MB for 2 tests?

How long does the test run and what are you results? A file that size will take minutes to download..... and no-one will do such a test....

Get a stopwatch and a calculator and work out how big the file is, if you don't want to believe your HMP.

According to HMP speedtest.net used 1.3MB for the download test and 363KB for the upload.

Maybe find that virus/malware/trojan/updates that's eating your data. It's probably causing your poor response as well.

Any idea whats causing the rest of us so many butt cramps?

Problem: Constantly having to refresh pages to get them to load. Timeouts on connections. Takes ages to establish a connection.

Tx!

Just to clarify, connecting to the network or the web page taking long or timing out?

I understand there is a lot involved in having a fix applied, but surely your technical team should know the system well enough to be able to give an estimate? If they can't, chances are they aren't sure whats wrong. And thats the part that worries me. If there is no idea what is causing the problem, there is no way to fix it.

I feel sorry for people that live in remote areas that wont be able to order ADSL or any other service. Being stuck with this as your only option must be hell. Especially because a lot of people rely on this for business purposes. Taking this long with fixes will sink any small business that relies on internet access.

Why don't you drop the network for a day or 2 and get all the stuff sorted in one go? I would much rather have no internet for 2 days than unusable internet for the rest of my natural life.

Timeouts on connections: Any outgoing connection - HTTP/FTP/MSN etc
Takes ages to establish connection: Connecting to the network. It used to take 2 secs or less. Now its taking 10+

On HTTP, what's the error message you get?

Hi

I'm experiencing the same kind of problems (timing out, taking long to connect), and I'm also in Midrand. The message firefox give is:

Code:
The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I already called 082155 but according to them there's no problems in Midrand.

Hope this will be fixed soon.

Thus my suspicion that it could be DNS related.

Do me a favour; when posting any problem, try and give a more clear description and then also do a 'ipconfig /all' and just post your IP and the DNS servers you're assigned. Let's see if we can pick up a common thread (pardon the pun).

Same problems as many others - need to refresh pages several times. Server disconnects/reset/time-outs been more common during the past week or so.

I use simplecheck to check my incoming mailboxes - it also tends to fail on between 1 & 3 of the 5 it checks. I can then check the failed ones one by one - which sometimes works....

Just had a DNS complaint from Simplecheck.

Tried opendns last night - it mentioned a proxy being in the middle - did not improve much.

Normal ping to the pop server - regularly lost 2 to 3 out of 4 packets - default size.. just ping pop3 etc.

3G connection IP stuff:
PPP adapter HUAWEI3G.Vodacom:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.53.56.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.53.56.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 196.207.32.69
196.43.1.11
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.11.12.13
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 10.11.12.14
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

Maybe one of the tin cans connecting the stings is rusted:eek:

"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." - The nasty firefox error i've been seeing. And also other weird sh|t.... stylesheets not loading on pages. Parts of the pages being blank etc. Seems that it just randomly drops data. I have tested this on both IE and FF on 3 different PCs, all get the same intermittent behaviour.

Anyone in an IT-type support environment, with mission-critical systems will tell you that change control is a very sensitive process.

Again, it's important to know what is actually wrong (thus my questions to you on your symptoms) before making an assumption on the actual cause and how widespread a problem is. At any given point in time we have hundreds of thousands of users connected to the data network. If a number of complaints come in, we need to isolate any commonalities and act on those. The larger the number of complaints, the more 'central' the problems will be. For example, when pre-paid battled to connect or got disconnected, it obviously pointed to an element in the core of the network. Same when we had the low international throughput.

A good indication is the number and type of calls coming into the call-desk. These number quickly shoot up if a problem is seen. It basically becomes a stats thing.

So, one person might say the 3G network is cr@p and another might agree. But it could well be different problem, with specific causes.

I still think we've licked the throughput problem, the pre-paid connectivity problems are not showing up either (on the systems themselves), so any problem currently reported is probably more geographic than centralised.

I do get a gut-feel that we might have intermittent DNS timeouts in the north, thus my request for more detail.

I know what you are going through man. It's DAMN annoying. I think we should forget internet access and go play on one of the many construction sites Midrand has to offer. I haven't made mud cakes in years.

Ok, we cleared the throat of the DNS server that serves the Midrand / Pta / KZN area. Did find a frog in it.

Let me know if things are better / worse / same.

Ok, things seem better. The problem persists on International though. But not quite as severe as previously.

Which sites? Maybe I can try and emulate with FF from Cpt?
