Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

We saw that and have found the culprit. Work is being done tonight to resolve some of this congestion in your area (Pta, north of Pta and KZN). Please test first thing tomorrow and let us know.

The Cape (E/W) should be much better now, can we get some feedback on data throughput in the Cape area?

Midrand, Gauteng area still awaiting some stuff that will only happen first thing next week.

How is the pre-paid connection problem? We made changes that should resolve this.

Thanks a million v3g. I will test tomorrow and let you know.

My connection in Pta East is also very unstable, for the last three days (actually unusable).

The problem is that I still have 80 MB left on my prepaid data bundle which expires today and I cannot use it !!!!!:mad::mad:

Come on Vodacom, we need to get data bundle roll-over !!!!!!

Can anyone get the Telkom speed test working?

Testing on the internet apn in Cape Town, I just got:

VC Speed Test: 882/354
iBurst Speed Test: 852/311
Sentech Speed Test: 720/did not test upload.

Any cool international test sites? (I'm busy with the ones on myADSL)

Stanford: 739/269

Speedtest.net - to Cpt Server: 524/346
Speedtest.net - to US Server: 509/304
Speedtest.net - to UK Server: 559/239

What time last night? A lot of work was done, so you might have caught it.

Probably around 10 or just before. Tried every now and then for an hour or so and then gave up. 3G signal disappeared totally so I guess they were probably working on the tower? Had a few problems before then with disconnections too but usually got back on quickly

Unstable as in disconnects or unstable as in cr@p throughput?

They did lots of stuff, so might have started earlier than normal. Typically they won't start before close to midnight, but it might have taken longer than 6 hours.

As long as its improving things. :) Only one 3G tower here too so there's no redundancy if they take it down for maintenance or anything I guess.

Tested my sim at work a few minutes ago on HSDPA, still not getting into the HSDPA zone:

:(:(:(

Your profile is for HSDPA. (1800/384)

To confirm 1000%, when you run the speed test, the LED on your E220 is turquoise (HSDPA) and not blue (3G), but you get the 3G (384/64) speeds?

If so, we need to ask Brad to give your tower a kick or two.

Both. Connects and authenticate sometimes. Bu after using it for a few seconds (no really ... seconds, maybe one minute) I get timeout on all the web sites I tried to access.

This pre-paid? As posted above, we did have problems. Are you now OK?

Go and have a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster on us!

What's the root of all these problems anyway, is demand just increasing exponentially?

Hi vodacom3g

I have been having 3g Problems as well in PTA (Mayville) and Houghton (JHB).

I am currently in Houghton (JHB) and getting the following using the internetVPN apn:

Ping Vodacom SMTP – no packet loss.
Vodacom Speed test – 865 kbps/215 kbps
Sentech speed test – 89.02 kbps
Speak Easy spped test – 43kbps/upload failed.
Ping www.saix.net 75% packet loss.

When I get back to Pretoria tonight I will post my results, but last night in PTA was very similar to the above mentioned figures.

What is going on?

Regards

Nico

My guess ... demand > capacity ... due to favorable price point ... and the other networks lagging behind.

I'm still waiting for MTN to install 3G/HSDPA in my area ... since May 2006! I've been living off their promises since then.

Things are starting to look better. I was down completely this morning from about 9:30am until 1pm this afteroon. Could not connect at all and kept getting authentication failures on the phone.

Now, this connection has been up for an hour and the previous one on a different computer was also up for an hour. No disconnections, speed is fine.

Connection seems really responsive when browsing and sending email. Last night it took me 3 hours to send a 1.5 Meg email. I tried through GMail, my hosted email server (overseas) and eventually got it through on smtp.vodacom.co.za. Kept getting timeouts. Now after the down time this morning, it seems like something has changed for the better.

@Abe, how is the other speed tests on your side, my Vodacom network seems fine two but routing to other parts are still very bad to unusable!

That's what I was thinking too, Telkom's slow install times don't help either I guess. MTN really need to do a major 3G/HSDPA network rollout to remain competitive, as well as sorting out their pricing which they seem to be taking forever to do.
