Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

There was a hardware failure that caused this late last night.

Funny thing is the box that caused the problem was (still is) scheduled to be replaced tomorrow night, so I think it took its last chance to break down.

Ahhh, so that's what happened last night.

I think I ran into problem at around 10:45pm. Internet apn connected but no throughput, and internetvpn would not connect at all. Tried both 3G/HSDPA and GPRS/EDGE.

I'm on a Top Up contract. So standard data contracts were unaffected?

Message from Vodacom: Dear customer, kindly be advised that your network problem that was reported has been resolved. Kindly contact vodacom customer care on 082111, if problem is ongoing. Kindly accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care (Cassandra Bagus)

Received within the last hour......

But the disconnects continue........

I'm told I'm close to the tower; which is why I get HSDPA. Why then does my signal keep dropping to zero!!!!! Is 200 meters from the tower too close? Do I have to move further away?

That's my understanding.

I'm busy having issues again in the Bothasig area .... the whole problem with the network dropping away seems to have been sorted - but my signal is extremely bad lately.

I'm not saying its weak, I get 3 to 4 bars of reception most of the time, but occasionally my throughput drops to zero - I couldn't even ping web-servers - and its as unstable as all hell - I keep moving between 3G and HDSPA constantly.

Phoning 155 doesn't really help, because they run through their list - and finally get me to disconnect and reconnect - after which the problem is solved ... for about 30 - 40 minutes. Did they break something on the tower?

Oh ... and my speed is dismal - 475 down and 75 up ... I may as well be using my cellphone.

I have been having problems for almost two weeks now. Really not impressed at the moment. Both on my cellphone and on my pc i am having the following problems. Constant disconnects, page not found error, no data throughput for one to two minutes at a time.

I connect on the internet apn. The speeds are fine just a really unreliable and frustrating service at the moment.

Please advise.

Have you called 155 to log a fault? Might be a local problem (i.e. your tower).

What device are you using to connect on your pc?
Are you only having problems at one specific location?
On your pc are you using a "3G only" option when connecting?

using my phone as a modem.
I have tested it with a usb modem and still have the same problems.
I have only tested it in the bellville area.
yes 3g is always on infact anything else is disabled on my phone.

So anyway for giggles i tried calling the data helpline now and spent 10 minutes convincing the operator that my phones settings are indeed fine and asking him to escalate the query.

Testing it in a different location might help determine if the fault is local or not and should also help you skip the "lets check all your settings" part of the conversation when calling 155.

What does help with getting a ref# from 155 is that when you then get no joy and v3g helps out he can have them look up the fault and what has been done or not.

Except that I had that problem night before last, and again last night - after the hardware was fixed. Was working fine during the day, wasn't working between at least 10pm and 11pm (possibly outside those hours too, but that's when I tried it).

It seemed like a DNS error (I'm using it from my phone, so can't do any clever tests) as it connects fine, just can't load any websites.

Same problems for me in Vredkloof (Brackenfell) last night .... also between 22h00 and 23h00.....

And just like you I had this problem the night before as well ... 22h00 till 01h30 ... but that was due to faulty hardware as per V3G's post.

So you are not alone CathJ.

I want to see what happens tonight at 22h00.

Very high latency using speedtest.net. I noticed slow speeds while browsing and then thought to check it on speedtest.

DL: 889 kbps
UL: 32 kbps
PING: 700 :O

Using E220 with internetvpn. Full signal. HSDPA.

Potchefstroom.

23:45 (ish)

That's fast compared to what I was getting. The highest I managed downstream was about 460 kbps ... most of the time it hovered around 300. Also with full signal.

Dumb question - how do I check which APN I'm using - and what can I change it to. I think I'm on whatever the default is - but not sure, since I've never bothered changing it.

Regardless though - I only experience problems in the Bothasig area at night - during the day in Cape Town (as in right now) my speedtest results are a lot better. Same when I check in Table View. So I'm fairly sure there is a problem in that area.

The default is internet apn. To use anything else like internetvpn apn, it needs to be activated first.

Same thing tonight (21:45). It was fine an hour ago, and now it wil connect but not find any websites. Seems just the same as the issue we had a while back where there just wasn't enough capacity during peak times (i.e. evenings) :(

I'm in southern suburbs, prepaid, browsing directly on phone.

Same on my side. Last night and tonight at the exact same times. Makes online gaming impossible. I cant even load my new bundle because it times out right before i can!
